12v Accessory hook up.

I have an accessory for my Sei which needs to be wired into the 12v electric supply. What would be best from peoples experience as a splicing point baring in mind its not one of these simple plug into cigar lighter jobs!! something like the cigar lighter power supply or something?? I don't want to pick anywhere where the supply is not strong/good. Be similar for the supply to an alarm or something at a guess, but not sure??

Sorry electronics are not my strong point.

Many Thanks

Re: 12v Accessory hook up.

Its only for a little dash light so doesn't need that much just says "wire into 12v vehicle supply"

Which one is the 12v wire for the cigar lighter? or is there only one leading to the lighter itself??

Are there any other poss locations inside the car.

Thanks

Re: 12v Accessory hook up.

In the mk1 punto there are three wires, red, black, and yellow.

Black and yellow is what ps2, tft, and laptop are running off in mine. If you've got a haynes manual, the ratings and wiring diagrams should all be in there If you haven't, get busy with a multimeter

Ciggie lighter was safest bet for me, I blow a fuse and I lose my clock and courtesy light, not the end of the world. Since electricals are hardly fiats striongpoint though, i'd double check, don't want to lose your headlights at night!!

Makes sense to me that the ciggie circuit is a pretty safe bet though, it's designed for numpties to overload really isn't it

Re: 12v Accessory hook up.

Lol my thinkings exactly will just use black or yellow wire from cig lighter or something and splice it off of it.

Cheers.

Ciggy lighter is fine, except if you want to be able to use the light with the ignition off. Certainly on the Sei, probably on the Cinq, there's no power to the ciggy lighter with ignition off.

If you splice into the wires connected to the lighter, can't you get a constant 12v feed? If there are three wires, they should be ground, live, and switched live (i.e. only on when ignition is on).

Punto wiring threw me for a loop, i think the switched was red, and the constant yellow. I'm pretty sure that's the wrong way round!

Re: 12v Accessory hook up.

So in this case which colour wire do i need to splice into for the cigar lighter power supply??

I don't mind if it works with/without ignition on.

Thanks

First things first, i'd disconnect the wiring from the ciggie lighter unit. It should terminate in a little block that is secured to the lighter unit, it should be removed be pushing in the little retaining clip and pulling it out gently but firmly.

After doing that, come back and tell us how many wires are connected to that block, and what colours they are.

I just want to check: you do intend to cut these wires, solder this dashlight (got a link to what this thing might look like?) inline, and then hook the lighter socket back up right?

The way you said you'd wire it to either the black or the yellow wire worries me a little, you realise that you need a live and ground wire right? Do you know anyone with a 'multimeter' you could borrow?

Re: 12v Accessory hook up.

Yes it comes with an earth wire which i'll connect no problems. Just wondered about the actual 12v supply for it thats all.

Could I not use a connector block or something where i split the wire into the light supply from the lighter supply?

Re: 12v Accessory hook up.

A choccy block would be a good option

Snip the ciggie wires, stick each wire into a seperate segment on the lower side, then screw the twisted ciggie socket and dashlight wires to the same segments from the other side, saves soldering, good point
