Unhappy MOT .... How much will all this cost?

Hey guys,

Hows tricks? Just had my sei MOT'd and it failed...

It failed on:
  • Both of the front suspension (one is broke, the other is breaking)
  • one of the rear brakes low reading
  • Dimmed light too low (think they might need replacing)

Could someone let me know how much I might expect to pay for this at a garage? Don't expect a proper quote or anything just a good guess?

Just before Xmas as well boo!

Cheers chaps!

Firstly, What bit of the front suspension has failed?

Rear brakes low, half an hour if its just adjustment, but when were they last serviced?

Does yours have electric adjustment or are they on the loaded setting?

Cheers

That would be the dampers then.
Start from about £50 / pair + fitting (probably 2-3 hours)

You'll have electric adjustable units then like me.. On your dash, left of the steering wheels behind the indicator stalk theres a round switch thing with 0,1,2 and 3. Make sure that is set on zero.. If it is set on another the lights will be pointing down a bit (this is for when you got a big load in back which would lower the back and thus raisee the front meaning lights are wrong). So check that isn't the fault first as it maybe that nothing is broken.

I had this problem until last night, basically the manual adjuster had come loose and would no longer hold causing the lens to fall down, luckily my glass was coming away so I took the headlight apart and araldited the adjuster back on and now have reasonably adjusted headlights

Re: MOT .... How much will all this cost?

Cheers for the replies.

I've just called Kwik Fit about the suspension and I have a few questions for you knowledgeable types ;-) :

- dampers and 'shocks' are the same thing right?
- They quoted a fitted price of either £70 or £90 depending on the type either gas or oil - which would it be?
- They also said I should have a wheel alignment done (at £49?!) - is this right?

Plan to have a go fixing the light myself at the weekend.

Cheers!

The stock fitment is oil. I'd get another quote, but £70 doesn't sound too bad.

Very strictly, yes. If you don't undo the track rod ends you can get away without it. Try a backstreet garage. Same for the brakes. Take the failure sheet in.

Re: MOT .... How much will all this cost?

In purely technical terms the spring absorbs the shock and the damper damps the occilations.

However. most people refer to dampers as shock absorbers,

Where you based, I have a full set of used but good 51 (40K) sporting suspension just sitting in the garage.

Thanks mate, but it's in the garage now being sorted.

No, Kwik-Fit (the sharks) didn't tell me that on the phone. But on double checking it was each - so £140 for both sides.

It's gone to my old local garage (now it's a 35 miles away!) - who are doing the work and have said they will throw in a free MOT for me. It pays to be loyal
