I don't want to sound dumb but how do you fit the timing belt. Do I have to back off the alternator and remove the belt? The edge lip of the sump appears to be in the way? Also, re the timing marks mentioned a number of times in various posts, How can I see them, there's the alternator pulley and the sump in the way.

It's not a difficult task, but it does need doing right. The timing marks (on the crank pulley and cam wheel) need to be aligned perfectly or it won't run properly.

As rallycinq says, the Haynes is spot on for this.
