Gear Knob

Hello,

I have recently been given a new alloy gear knob as a present for my 99 reg Seicento, and i am having a real big problem actually fitting it into the car!

Ive searched on the forum and found basic instructions, for example, hacksawing the factory moulded gear knob off, but i am at a loss on how to do it.

Can anyone suggest any ways to remove the moulded knob? as am a bit stuck

Thanks! (first time poster!!! )

Re: Gear Knob

its different on the sei over the cinq but im not sure how.
for a cinq you lower the leather gaitor
undo the nut securing the reverse cable
withdraw the pin that passes through the gear shaft
lift of the the gearknob assembly

thats from memory though

Re: Gear Knob

This thread may help you it has a few pics, if anything will give you an idea what things will look like etc.

http://www.fiatforum.com/cinq-sei-st...-gearknob.html

Cinq and sei sportings have same style gearknob custard.

As this is an SX sei i think it is a different style of gearknob altogether and isnt lift up reverse as well.

You may need the OMP adaptor if not already got one.

Hope this helps.

If you can i think we would appreciate some sort of guide, in picture and word form for future reference for everyone if thats ok

Re: Gear Knob

On a Sei it's simpler than a Cinq. There's no reverse inhibitor cable. You need a hacksaw, a sharp stanley knife and a big flat screwdriver.

Unpop the press stud at the top of the gaitor and push the gaitor down, securing it out of the way with selotape or something. Working inside the car, make a cut from side to side through the top of the gear nob until you hit metal. Make two cuts through the softer plastic from top to bottom of the knob, meeting up with the cut through the top. Insert screwdriver in cut and, supporting the gear lever, lever the screwdriver until the hard plastic cracks and the lot falls off (you may have to tap one half with a hammer). That's it.

All this because the knob is actually molded onto the lever and retained, not by glue, but by a waisted section. The outer surface of the knob is in a softer plastic than the harder body of it and appears to be molded on top of that. All in all, a clever peice of production engineering, but a PITA to remove.

Re: Gear Knob

Is that the same techique for the Sei Sporting leather knob? Not that I plan on changing mine, but I am curious if that also needs to be trashed to remove it?

Re: Gear Knob

More or less, but I've an idea that some Sportings have a push down for reverse mechanism which may make life more complicated. Of course, they've also got leather in place of or as well as (the soft) plastic.

If the car has push down reverse it's easy enough to do without it, but may mean getting the gearchange mechanism from an S or SX.

My S has a Sporting gearbox.................
