I am aware that I may need a new clutch or pressure plate in the near future?? Because I need a new clutch the gears are very hard to engage.

I've had to move the seat forward to be able to press the pedal all the way down. The strange thing is the pedal sits very much lower (and seems to be getting lower) than the rest of the pedals and is making a creaking sound when pressing it. What is happening here? Will I need to get the clutch done as soon as possible before something else goes wrong?

Any advice greatly appreciated...

First thing would to be try adjusting the clutch cable to bring the clutch pedal higher up. You need to wind the nut on the end of the clutch cable on more until the pedal is about the same height as the brake pedal. See what that is like before going for a new clutch.

I have had my cinq for two years and the clutch has creaked the whole time, not for much longer though (in the middle of replacing it). It might be fine it might not be, would depend how tough you are with the clutch and gears I suppose. One way to find out is to pull it all apart and replace it. I have ragged mine for two years and it has lived, few broken clutch cables though (which did not bother me). The creaking might be coming from a worn clutch, just keep an eye on it if your not getting it replaced soon.

Check whether the creaking is coming from the drivers or passengers side, assuming right hand drive. If drivers side lubricate the bush where the pedal bears on the shaft. If passengers, check that all the internal linkages are moving smoothly. It might be worth disconnecting the clutch cable from the mechanism and checking everythings moves as it should before blaming the clutch.

hi ya

yeah, I had a new clutch cable fitted about a month ago now. The pedal was at an average height but now is getting lower & lower. Is it possible to slightly stretch over time therefore explaining why the pedal is lower a month after it left the garage?

You see, I'm afraid to touch the cable just incase I make a expensive mistake such as over doing it even up to the pedal height.

Any opinions appreciated...

i think youve hit the nail on the head there mate.... ive changed the clutch cable on all 3 of the centos ive owned, and this has happened on all of them, grab a haynes manual and that will show you how to tighten it easily...... its literally just a case of tightening a bolt on the threaded end of the cable so that it is tigher and can engage the gears better.

IIRC there should be about 12-15cm of pedal movement inside the car, if you find that you have to increase this ammount over time then it could indicate your clutch is wearing out. (n)

and even if u do manage to snap the cable somehow... its a £15 part from fiat, and 1hr to fit it on your own!

the thing is, the screw is quite far up the thread. biting points low.

havent done the clutch test yet by selection 5th, holding the revs and bringing the clutch up to see if stalls or not??

Over the last 8 years I have fitted three cables to two cinqs I have owned. I think that it it possibly better to put up with a cable that clearly needs adjusting ie. the pedal is low . If you take up the slack at the adjuster, which is an easy job, the cable usually snaps shortly after. I think that when you have car with an old clutch that shows a need for adjustment, live with it or change the clutch.
