Re: my hub nut meant to look like this

mine don't look like that, its just looks like a normal nut, ie. it don't have that bit sticking out forward. On the second pic it looks like its been undone at some point coz of the marks on it - your not supposed to re-use them, you ever had it off?

No expert, but it looks to be missing a split pin..

Don't compromise, get it to a garage for an opinion. 2 second job.

Mine doesn't have a split pin but i see what you mean. If it is torqued properly though that shouldn't matter too much. If it worries you then you could change it - Gaz if you do decide to change it you might as well do the wheel bearing at the same time, 5 min job on the back

Re: my hub nut meant to look like this

they dont have a split pin, they do have the sticking out bit,
the sticking out bit gets bashed into the grooves to stop the nut coming off, if you got no bits in the grooves, then it will undo an fall off

Re: my hub nut meant to look like this

when you get a new one gaz its just a nut but with a long extended collar round the top.once fitted you stake it on both sides over the groove on the drive shaft.
should be renewed whenever removed.
yours looks well abused

edit:you dont need to whack it so hard it splits the metal, all your doing is bending the metal into the grooves to revent it undoing itself

Re: my hub nut meant to look like this

They are tight 240N/m which once they have been staked are difficult to get off, best way, remove the staking, remove centre from wheel, reattach wheel to car, and then enjoy, 32mm socket required and a very big bar, or a good impact driver.
