Saver wheel heating up

So my friend asked me 'can I have a drive in your car on this private road'. She's had forty lessons, so I said yes. She clearly hasn't had the 'why you should avoid potholes' lesson now, and I'm in desperate need of a new alloy and tyre.

HOWEVER, after fitting the saver wheel and driving back to London from Kent I noticed that the wheel itself was getting very very hot - does this seem normal to anyone else?

what speed were you driving?its a smaller tyre so will generate more heat compared to the others

Re: Saver wheel heating up

If my memory serves me correctly space savers shouldn't be used at speeds above 50mph and only used for a short distance of 50miles. i could be wrong with this esimate but only thing i can think off

I presume you didn't exceed the 50mph limit for these tyres.

Cheers

Standard sporting alloys come up on ebay from time to time, also in the classifieds

Re: Saver wheel heating up

I would expect that to be normal, although I've never really checked.

As others have said you shouldn't exceed 50mph, should use it for no more than 50miles, and I would recommend taking things easy. It won't perform as well as a normal tyre! So, with your journey you were probably at risk of something like a blowout

Re: Saver wheel heating up

No, I didn't go over 50 on the way back, and the journey was about 40 miles or so, so I'll have to get a new saver wheel...! I was just concerned about the temperature of the actual wheel as opposed to the tyre.

Re: Saver wheel heating up

Is it fitted to a rear wheel? If so, another possibility could be a binding brake. The heat generated by friction could conceivably conduct to the rim.

Re: Saver wheel heating up

wel, i know on my front alloys they heat up after a fast journey (not so much distance but braking and speed) cause of the heat generated by the brakes. i wonder if this applies here?

Re: Saver wheel heating up

Did you run the space saver on the front or rear axle? I would have thought putting it on the rear would have kept it cooler, and helped with the braking etc.

I've driven on a Tipo space saver for well over 50 miles at over 50mph and it wasn't even inflated fully. It was 2am and I'd got a puncture on the England/Scotland border in heavy snow in December!

Re: Saver wheel heating up

car make any whirry noises, could be a wheel bearing on the way out causing heat. Perhaps put the space save on a different wheel and go for a small drive see if it gets as hot?

Re: Saver wheel heating up

There has been a squeaky from that front right which I had presumed was the brake rubbing - a light dab on the brake would stop it as would steering. However, this stopped when the spacer was fitter.

Does anyone know any good breakers yards near London then? Any recommendations?

Re: Saver wheel heating up

that squeking you hear is what i had a few months back, discovered my brake pads were VERY low and down to bare metal in places, this was also causing alot of heat on the bolts and wheels.

think thats your problem!

take off your wheels and look at the pads and discs, check theyre not low!
