| Petrol cap Hole Hi This is my first post but I have been reading the forums for a while. I have a cinquecento and just replaced my petrol cap. The old one had a small air hole in it but the new one does not. Now eveytime I open my petrol cap there is a short sharp relese of gas. Does anyone know if this matters? Do you think I need that air hole? I got the new petrol cap from a garage who got it from Fiat so I goes it should be OK if Fiat supplied it like that but I just wanted to make sure Thanks

| mad bad and very very old | Re: Petrol cap Hole Beg to differ, I'm afraid. I think the rush of air is inward not outward. The fuel being pumped out leaves a vacuum. Best case scenario, the car will grind to a halt with fuel starvation. Worst case scenario, the tank will implode. Get it sorted, even if it means a 2mm drill bit. Cheers D

| Re: Petrol cap Hole Well the thing is I have been on holiday and not driven my car for 5 days. Befor I left I opened the petrol cap and it did that air thing then when I came back after the 5 days no one had touch my car started it up or anything and I opened the petrol cap and it still did it. The petrol would not be being used unless I started it up would it? so there would be no fuel being pumped out. Im also 80% sure that the air is coming out

| Re: Petrol cap Hole It's no problem - every car should blow air out. Ignore post about sucking air in danger. There is no way the tank could implode. If air could not get into the fuel tank petrol could not be sucked up by the fuel pump - meaning the engine would cut out. It's like putting your mouth over the end of a bottle and trying to suck the juice out - unless air can get in, the juice won't come out. Only when the engine won't run until you take the cap off should you consider drilling a hole in the cap.
