Re: rear drum brakes with pics question

Well spotted. The clip is missing so the right hand shoe will be at an angle. As you put the drum on the shoes is grabbing it. Replace the clip and the shoe shoud be parallel.

Cheers

They are Cento specific, I picked up a Delphi Lockheed axle set for £4.60 from factors.

Re: rear drum brakes with pics question

and for the springs, get a long flat bladed screwdriver and grind a V into the end.then you can push the springs in.
still takes a fair bit of force though

Re: rear drum brakes with pics question

yup! you get the hang of it! especially when you fit them then go to do the other side and realise you put the springs on the wrong way round and have to swap them! not that i did that!

Re: rear drum brakes with pics question

All the above, but you say the handbrake isn't working? I wonder if the handbrake "elbows" are seized and preventing the shoes from fully retracting?

To see if this is a problem, disconnect the handbrake at both sides and try again. Whatever the case, as you have to dismantle the drums to get the elbows out if they're seized, you may as well do that now. If they're seized, remove the elbows, soak in WD40, whap with mallet until they're really free and then wipe of the WD and work a little coppaslip into the elbow joint. Then put it all back together again.

I'm not sure if I got you right at the top, but the shoes must locate in the grooves of the slave cylinder.

If the friction material on any of the shoes is down to 2mm or so, you may as well replace the shoe set. Costs around £14 from yer friendly local factor.

Re: rear drum brakes with pics question

I also find that the arms wear where they bear on the shoes so they don't move far enough.

Cheers
