Oil & mpg

Just a quick question, after changing the thermostat i'm still not getting great mpg but does using cheap oil effect the mpg as i'm currently using very cheap oil, £8 for 5litres, lack of funds at the time!

I guess it will depend on the viscosity of the oil. Thicker oils will increase fuel consumption. But it would all depends on how off your mpg is because I'm sure the oil wouldn't make a big difference.

What mpg do you get, and what type of driving (e.g. all rush hour queues or all 55mph m'way cruises)

morning trip roughly 20miles, dual carridgeway usually constant speed at 70ish. but use gears to get to 70. just filled up, only got 267miles and put 33 litres in, my calculations 34mpg.

Fuel Consumption
To EEC Directive 80/1268
Urban Cycle : 37.7 mpg (7.5 L/100km)
Constant 56 mph : 60.1 mpg (4.7 L/100km)
Constant 75 mph : 44.8 mpg (6.3 L/100km)
To EEC Directive 93/116
Urban Cycle : 33.23 mpg (8.5 L/100km)
Out of Town : 57.65 mpg (4.9 L/100km)
Combined : 45.56 mpg (6.2 L/100km)
Touring Consumption : 45.6 mpg (6.19 L/100km)

These are the specified figures, make what you want of them, hope they help, you could just be chewing a lot of oil because it is just cheap oil, I suggest Mobil 1,

Jonny

33 litres - you just about had the tank bone dry!

Would expect to see closer to 45mpg on that run. I'd suspect something's amiss, usual first stop is a thorough service - air filter, oil and filter, plugs and maybe leads.

After that, maybe get the emissions checked (MOT tester should do it for a couple of quid) to see if it's running mega rich - could be lambda sensor probs. Are there any other symptoms?

BTW, it's not on 17's or anything, is it?

Pete.

Been said before, but a dodgy Lambda sensor will give poor mpg.
