different cento same squeak!!!

hey all

first car was a cinq, during its first summer it got a really squeaky front break - not squeaky when i braked, permanently, and after a long ish drive (10+ miles)

so im driving along after about ten miles and its sort of a whirry whistling squeak from the front drivers wheel, its definitely from the brakes because when you break the squeak goes away... but comes back straight after youve lifted the pedal

i was skint at the time so never had it looked at and sold the car soon after

cue cento number 2, my 2000(x) seicento sporting, there was no squeak last summer but there is this summer - same noise same wheel

questions are this...

i know the noise is heat related but WHY IS IT DOING IT!?!?!

havent changed the pads in 13 months of car ownership (dont know how long before that) and i dont trust the garage who did my MOT/service last month so i really dont know the situation of whether the brake pads are low or not...

should i change the pads as a precaution?

are the sei's brakes exactly the same to a cinq sportings?

Re: different cento same squeak!!!

13months without a pad change when you don't know when they were changed before doesn't sound too good. Get the wheels off and check them as shown in the Haynes Cinq manual. I'd guess they probably need changing anyway, but this might not solve your problems. Does the car pull to the left or right when you brake? If so you could have a sticking caliper, which could explain your squeak. It Could just be a stone in the brakes, but I doubt it.

I'm pretty sure the sei brakes are same as the cinq brakes, a sei owner would be able to confirm this.

Re: different cento same squeak!!!

brakes are the same bar a slight change to the rear design.
as said get the wheels off, could be a slightly dragging pad amongst other things.
never hurts to change the pads and not to expensive

Re: different cento same squeak!!!

Skwwek will be related to a loose pad. As the brakes warm up the pad expands slightly stopping said skweek. You may not need pads, but as yu'll need to emove the existing ones and clean up the caliper and holder, you might as well put new pads in while you're there.

Cheers

Re: different cento same squeak!!!

13 months is a fair bit of time to go without a brake service, every 6 months I strip down the brakes for an inspection and clean, this lets me try to prevent seized calipers and see when I will need pads.

don't get me wrong the car had a full service last month...

BUT the garage that i had the service done at was the garage i bought the car from because it was still covered under warranty

the warranty covered brake pads!!!

so it was really not in there interest to spot a problem with the brakes - and ive had 12 months of hell from them - so i really dont trust their inspections of my brakes!!!

Re: different cento same squeak!!!

I doubt brake pads would be covered for wear and tear, only failure, and brake pads rarely fail through anything other than wear and tear.

Its an easy line to put in a warranty document as they'll never have to pay out on it.

Cheers

Re: different cento same squeak!!!

I can assure you that Network Q does not cover brake pad wear and tear. I spend my days behind the service desk of a Vauxhall repairer.

Cheers
