Power Loss?

HI folks, I hope someone can id this fault for me, as its getting to be a pain in the neck...

When starting engine up or moving away from juctions/lights the sei tends to be very slow and lacking power. The car struggles to go (It feels if 1/2 of the engine is working). As this happens I tend to pump the gas as i need the power, and all of a sudden the engine over rev bloody quick! - this fault doesn't happen all of the time.

What is causing this? Is it the Lamber Sensor or something else.

Note - fuel injection light does not light up. So fuel injection is okay.

Could be map sensor rather than lambda. Both are to do with the injection but, in general, the lambda problem makes its self known once the revs are up a bit. Check the pipe leading to the map sensor, remove it and give it a good blow out.

Also make sure that the plug leads are OK. I recently found a corroded plug top had caused the connector to erode away insde the insulation. Pull each lead off in turn and have a look at both the plug top and the state of the inside of the lead.

Cheers

D

At a guess, I'd imagine that a cylinder 'dies'. There could be a few reasons for this, maybe the spark isn't getting there (plugs and leads)?

Yes Duckling, it does feel if the cylinder does die, and the over revs due to extra fuel in the system.

Will look at the sparks tomorrow, is there a way of testing the sparks without running the engine?

I've heard about map sensor on honestjohn forums, I gonna ask a very stupid question, where is it on a 899cc engine?

Next to the passenger side suspension top strut. it's upside down and has a very thin pipe running from it to the engine;)

Well, had a look at the pipe work from the box of tricks to the engine. This pipe is connected to a white/black module which says dis carb on it. Anyways pipe has 2 splits - 1 near the sensor and 1 on another bend. A bit of tape to cure the problem for now i guess.

Silver Sei, check the pipe from the map sensor on the right that comes from the Dist Carb. This has now cured my problem as the pipe had 2 holes in it and was leaking air out. I just need to get a replacment from the scrappy as I am not going to pay £14 for a rubber pipe!

Note, mine is also near its 36k service.
