Firstly if you want a proper induction kit, get the GSR

The GSR kit is a proven winner. But I wanted a project.

And if u can't afford one like me then make your own!

Ingredients:
Air filter, mine is a 60mm 'green' filter from ebay, £15 with p&p
Reducing 90 degree silicone pipe (samco one) 60mm to 51mm, £20
50mm plastic drainage pipe from homebase, 2m for £6, i couldn't find it any shorter!
silicone reducer from ebay ,51mm to 38mm, £10
Breather filter, from local shop, £10
899 cap few £ from ebay, bolts and gasket from phil from here for nothing, cheers !!!!

Before anyone days that I only have one bolt in, yes I know, I've snapped one of the normal long ones in the end and need to get the bit out

Also I've used a breather filter instead of connecting this to the cap, will this cause any long term problems? I've had a long run out and had no problems with it all, no oil spilling or smells.

All in all cost me £50, well, £60 if you include the breather.

It has a nice noise at around 3k and seems to pick up nicer at high and low rpm. Anyway here is some nice pics.

The two pipes and the aircraft grade aluminum spacer were £70 from sfs (google) plus the filter meant that it was as dear as a GSR which was silly.

However, I have yet to come across a kit that has a brace for the filter as everyone I have seen just dangles about and under load/cornering etc they all move, mines is bodged with cable ties.

Chris, thanks for the acknowledgement.

And I have to congratulate to your honesty as well as the fact that you tried to do something yourself and it worked out quite good.

@ bloomfieldliam - very good result for the fact that you did not have a custom made hose available.

Did the drain pipe come in that colour?

:D Na, Was a funny gray colour, just some spray paint I had left over ;)

Also I forgot to mention that there's a plastic bit of pipe between the filter and the samco hose which you can't see, its just a tiny bit of 60mm to hold both filter and pipe together :)

Thanks Peter, it was a bit of a bodge but the difference was clearly noticable at higher speeds than what the K&N delivered much to my GF's disgust:devil:

in terms of the breather filter chris,

i ahev one fitted on my punto and has recently had an oil change due to the head gasket going, however the mechanic said that the breather filter had more downsides than good as when he came to drain the oil it would not come out confused he saw the breather filter and removed it and the oil happily glugged out - fact of the matter was that the breather wasn't actuall letting the engine breathe!

hope that helps,

Josh

Usually breather filter work fine, unless they are not fitted properly or they are clogged up (more likely the flame inhibitor full of sludge and carbon deposits) or are defective. The GSR induction kit used to be on offer with breather filter but was discontinued because a few people complained of the oil vapour smell.

someone said mot rules are/have changing/changed, and the pipe must now always go into the bob

That would suck, suppose it would be a quick swap over.

Also yeah the breather should be fine as long as it aint clogged. :)

the breather though (so i've been told) relies on being under suction hence why it goes into the 'bob' or in my case the bottom of the K&N

But with my standard box it got clogged in the tube anyway, so errr, i dunno :yum:

Anyone?

It should not be clogged up. The reason for the breather is to vent the crank case. As any engine has got some by blow pressure will build up, which nedds to be released. One way to do this is the brather at the cam cover. But this is not the most efficient way. Having an additional breather from the sump will help

Just also noticed that it keeps pulling after 5-6k

Before it used to go as high, but didnt pull, not it wants to rev and rev and rev
