Hi,

I have still not been able to get my fiat sporting to start even though its turning over.I have had a thought, all that actually happened to my car was the bettery drained flat because the fan belt had broken off at some point. I remember the guy putting on the new fanbelt had a great deal of difficulty in doing so even though he insisted it was the right belt for the car(it was not from fiat however). My question is this and forgive me if its a silly one, if he struggled to put the belt on could that mean the belt is too tight (possibly the wrong belt?) and that is why its not starting?

Thanks dfor your help

This is a follow on from: http://www.fiatcentral.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5958

Was the mechanic you mentioned a real mechanic? Did he suggest anything when the car would not start?

Question for forum. Could this be the timing belt?

hi polecat, i have used the mechanic before for some work on previous cars and he seemed very competent. When the car wouldnt start he thought it was the 'big end' but other people have told me it cant be the big end as the car would start and be noisy if this was the case. Can anyone help please? I just have my suspicions about the belt, also is there any sensor down there he could have knocked out of place?. We have tried tow starting , tried the emergencey cut of switch , so any help is appreciated

hi when you say it doesnt start, does it turn over on the starter and if so does it cough etc or just turn over.when you tow started it did it fire at all.from doing the timing belt i know the fan belt is a tight fit but that wont stop it firing.he has either disturbed/disconnected/broken something or it is a coincidence.does the battery light come on now.give us some info and i'll try me best:)

Hi, i have trickle charged the battery and so it turns over strongly when trying to start, it feels like its about to start but doesnt - feels like it 'hits a barrier' not sure if that makes sense. We have checked that fuel is coming through, have pressed the inertia switch and there does seem to be a spark. i dont think its the keycode system as when i turn the key in the ignition the light goes on and off as does the funny spark plug shaped light. The battery light stays on when i turn it - but im assuming thats because its not started yet. hope you guys can help

It may be the crank sensor (i think thats what its called), this may have been knocked when putting the belt on. Invest in a haynes manual, the bible of the cinq!

>> the sensor supplys the ecu with the data needed for it to supply current to the ignition coils to produce a spark.

Does it produce a spark when turning over?

hi guys thatnks for the help so far. My car is an 1.1 sporting on a R plate 97, I have bought a hayes manual and got someone who knows more about cars then me but is no fiat expert to look at the timing, he says the timing is in line. With regard to the crank sensore is there any way i can check it without having to have a full diagnotstic? It does produce a spark when turning over , we chedked this.

with regard to it turning over, it turns over well, not sure what you mean by coughing but it feels like itll start then just stops and i have to retry starting it again. Whilst towing it did the same.

Any ideas guys and again thanks for everything so far

sorry about the terrible typing. What i mean , is there anyway i can check for myself if the sensor is damaged?
