Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

Hi

Got a leaky inner cv joint on an 899cc seicento sx 2001 model. I am going to drain the gearbox oil and refill but cant find a reference as to how much oil is needed. Any help would be great.

Also, where is the refill plug for the gearbox?

thanks in advance

Cy

How weird, I just asked the same thing via text message and someone kind looked it up for me in Haynes. 2.4l (assuming it is similar/ the same as in a cinq) and you need 8mm and 12mm allen keys for bottom and top plugs respectively (again assuming same as cinq). If anyone could come up with a definitive answer as to if they are the same then that would be better than my guesswork which has been known to be wrong

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

Ok thanks thats great. I would assume they are the same but a friend of mine is a mechanic and told me to remove the filler plug and fill the box until the level is just reaching the lower edge of the hole so either way i guess i'll find out if the cinq and sei are the same.

Certainly the engine is almost identical in my wifes seicento compared to the old cinq it has replaced.

We had some squealing too but ours was a result of a leaky rocker gasket spraying oil onto the alternator belt. Its while i was changing the rocker gasket and belt that i noticed the leaky boot. Have you ever tried using one of those universal split cv boot kits? Thats what i bought because the fiat dealer was closed and none of the motorfactor places had the right boot.

Did you SMS somebody else then too? I was just wrenching the NSR spring off when your message came through...I didnt look it up, that was a purely off the cuff number based on previous experience .

Drain plugs are the same for S/Sx and Sporting . 12mm drain, and 8mm fill.

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

I did Tom, my phone was playing up and showed texts as not being sent when they were (be glad to get my usual one back) so I sent one to Pete several times, didn't think it had sent, then sent one to you, only to get a reply from Pete as well

I didn't realise there were different types of gear oil, the shop that sold me the keys just had one on the shelf that said 'suitable for manual transmission cars' so I just picked that up. It sounds very thick anyway.

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

Ok just finished the job.

Universal split cv joints are a nightmare. I am going to order a proper fiat inner cv ang get the job done properly. I dont have much faith that the joint will last for long.

One thing i did notice is that both the drainplug and filler plug were 12mm

Thanks for all the imput guys

Cy ;-)

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

I've just been under to do mine as well but can't get the filler cap undone so I have a mate with muscles and a big ratchet coming round tomorrow to see if he can shift it Can't find a split but there's definitely a leak down there somewhere, it's black and wet and yucky, will just fill up for now and consider sending it to the garage for a better look There also seem to be some random bolts missing so it looks like other work has been done down there at some point and they had bits left over afterwards

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

if its a bit stuck, spray a bit of pentrating oil on the drain plug - see if that'll free it up a bit for tomorrow.

On the 899's the inner CV joints are lubed by the gearbox oil, if one of the rubber CV boots have split - it'd leak gearbox oil. Might wanna check they're intact before replacing the gearbox oil. I'm not sure if you can replace them without having to drain the box.

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

Thats right arc, you cant replace the boot without draining almost all of the gearbox oil.

My drain plug was stuck too but a quick spray with plusgas and ten minutes to let it soak in. I then got my biggest ratchet and it came off no problems.

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

Also, if the oils black isnt it more likely to be engine oil, like from a leaky sump or rocker gasket?

Re: Help how much gearbox oil seicento 899

Done that already arc (and left it half an hour and tried again myself), thanks for the thought though What you say about draining is also why I'm just topping up for now (if mate can get it undone) and not replacing as I had originally planned
