I totally agree with rallycinq here, all the parts are cheap cheap, if you take it apart why not just refresh it.
Same goes for up front really, i'd not bother replacing the balljoint dust boots, the dirt will already be in there destroying it now the boots damaged. Just replace the arms with new ones, as said above they aren't expensive either. I do hope Those prices they gave you were fitted prices, even then they seem steep to me but hey, you got us lot now, you don't need garages anymore ;)

Brake lines also, its been a long time since i bought any but actual pre-formed solid brake lines always used to be cheap from fiat, few quid per pipe so if you wanting to change the solid lines anywhere its worth getting a price, its much easier and quicker than making your own lines (although that can be strangely therapeutic if you are in the right mood lol)

Okay. Think I need to do a recky of everything I NEED To get to do what is required, and everything I SHOULD get that are optional but worth doing..

Front control arms
Brake bleeding kit if you are gonna be on your own bleeding brakes after or just a jar and bit of pipe if you have a helper.

Thats what i would buy off the bat without even looking at the car myself. Then I would possibly consider rear wheel bearings depending on mileage and stuff, they are about 30-40 quid each and a complete hub and bearing so bar undoing the hub nut its super super easy. And brake lines, will have to have a look at these yourself and see how bad you think they are, and if you replace whether you want to just get pipe and make your own or buy oem replacements.

edit: you'll want some brake fluid as well for when bleeding.

If the shoes have plenty of friction material left and they are already bedded in to fit properly against the drums, why are people suggesting put new shoes and drums on anyway?
The car has less than 40, 000 miles on it from new.

They may sit nicely now, but when the whole thing has to come apart and be put back together again for the new cylinders to be fitted, they won't sit nicely anymore.

I am not trying to be awkward
simply don't understand at the moment. Always willing to listen and learn .

Doing one side at a time so as to not mix parts side to side, mark shoes leading and trailing , do tasks needed , reassemble everything thing as it was before.

How can parts that have been working together for 10s of thousands of miles suddenly not sit well ?
This car also passed service and parking MOT brake tests.

I have never had to replace shoes and drums that are still serviceable, following other work on braking system , even following a total strip down and rebuild.

Same goes for the shoe fitting springs and retainers, perfectly re-useable in most circumstance and nothing at all wrong with reusing the old stuff, I don't think any of us claimed there was. Merely that for the price of parts why not just have nice new stuff and everything be new. I mean afterall we are doing this at home, we are not set to a the same constraints a garage would be and also they want to just fix the specific item broke to get the job cheap as well as out the door ready for the next one. Nothing wrong with that, its fixed afterall.

Being that I would always be doing work on my own cars, if i take something apart I'm inclined to replace more than necessary to get the job done, then i have peace of mind that the particular part of the car is tip top and I am not going to have to back there for a good while to replace something else that would have easy to do while i was already there. I will openly admit I totally get carried away sometimes but hey its my passion and hobby so why not lol. I am not so cavalier about it when i work on say my dads car, cause for one he doesn't really care he just wants his car back, and two, the parts are not so cheap

Well, I have to say - All these thoughts and opinions are interesting to read. From my point of view, I am open to everybodies opinion and suggestions, then I'll pull out what I do or don't want from all of that.

Replacing parts because you want and choose too .

Cheap parts from a quality brand I can understand.

Cheap parts from unknown brand keep clear of , my experience has been they cause more problems, expense and waste a lot time.

For me if parts on car are good quality and have 10s of thousand miles left of life I don't replace due to cost to the environment.

Unscrupulous people will replace a lot of parts that don't need replacing because they charge a mark up on all the parts and can charge for extra labour. These types aren't interested in doing the job quickly either.

Right. All inspected, and now we know what we're looking at.
Cylinders don't actually appear to be leaking - Maybe one is a smidge, but I think for the price of them, I'll replace those anyway. The brake pipes are shot away - one squirts fluid when you press the brake. the other is just corroded and could do with changing.
Dust cover needs doing, so that's a new arm needed there.
The horn.. yeah, that still works...
 
Fiat part numbers for metal brake pipes between wheel cylinder and flexible hose

Right hand side 51790426

Left hand side 51790427

Left and right as if sat in vehicle facing forward ie in right hand drive car the right side is the side with steering wheel.
