I've just finished fitting the head to a '94 Cinq and can't get it to start. I'm just wondering about the plug lead order from the coil pack. Is it 4-1-3-2 as you look down from the top to bottom?

And anybody know which colour-connector goes to the top?

The workshop manual has the coil packs side by side, but they're one above the other...

I've attached a couple of images

Don't worry
One coil does 1 and 4
The other coil does 2 and 3
If it does not run swap the low voltage connectors around

It won't make a difference if you mix up the 1and 4 HT leads as long as they are on 1 and 4 plugs because you get a spark at both at same time.
Same with 2 and 3 HT leads doesn't matter so long as they on 2 and 3 plugs

Thanks for that, Jackwhoo. To be on the safe side I'd tried every combination known to man, without success.

It seems to be a fuel problem. Pouring petrol direct into the throttle body allows the car to run for a couple of seconds. When it stops raining in a couple of days I'll see if I can suss out the cause of no fuel..

try hitting the fuel reset up under the dashboard on the bulkhead

I've looked at the images online and the fuel cut-off should be in the passenger footwell, but isn't... Despite a search including wife and sniffer dogs I can't find it anywhere.

Anyone know of a secret location? I really have looked everywhere..

its behind a small plastic cover, almost bang on in the middle of the car between the footwells. Its probably easier to just listen for the fuel pump when you switch ignition on to check it.

From your first post I feel like you are looking at the 1108cc info in the manual and have a 899cc engine - the coils on an 899 are one above each other unlike the 1108 engine.. From memory, and its been a long time since i touched a 899 but, the lower coil is 1&4 and the upper 2&3.

As with the other thread I just replied to, make sure the bottom pulley (the ones that bolts onto the crank and has the alternator belt on) is the right way round, it has to go the right way or it won't inject fuel or spark the plugs at the right time.

After that you wanna check you have both fuel and spark. Take the bob off the top of the throttle body and look down at the butterfly while someone cranks it over - you should be able to see fuel pooling a bit on the butterfly - not much but you should see it.
For spark take one of the plugs out out and just lay it on the valve cover with the HT lead attached and crank the engine and check its sparking. If you like you can test one from each coilpack to be sure they are both firing.

If you have no spark or fuel then its 99.999999% going to be the crank sensor needs changing, or its not properly connected or its wiring is damaged.

It will run when neat fuel poured in inlet manifold according to previous post.

yep, detail is very thin though.. I'd still check for fuel and spark, takes 2 seconds and then you know 100%. It never said it runs well or badly, so i can't be sure it is sparking on both coils hence why i suggested to check it. Granted its not likely a crank sensor but I just stuck that there for future knowledge of anyone reading.

I mean it doesn't take much for an engine to work.... fuel, spark and timing. So check the fuel and the spark - if that works it has to be timing really. Yes I am simplfying slightly but thats the meat of it

I'm waiting for a crankshaft sensor to arrive. Though for the life of me I can't see why it would have failed whilst the car was just standing. Still ...

But, thanks for all the replies. When the sensor arrives and I get the car started I may just get rid of it as it's never used anyway.

I could really see myself having another Rover P4 or maybe that blue Humber:

Plus At least the majority of crank sensors are relatively easy to access.

Nice to see you posting again blu73

If the coils were the wrong way round you would be having flames out the TB!!!

So it is a fuel issue. I can't see the relevance of a crank sensor at this moment in time.

D
The fuel pump would stop after priming if ECU not seeing crank rotating from crank sensor
