So we gets round to this job today. 8 hours and no real drama but i have a slight whine. I think its not that bad and sure my Stilo had a whine also. Anyone else left with a whine after changing belt and did you bother slackening off the tensioner?

When I had that whine to the only belt my cinq has (fitted last summer) ,I spray some silicon lubricant from the outside of the belt (engine on) and stopped,a tip from an old mechanic I new.
First slightly released the tension but then did it again.
3 months passed since the spray.

To be quite honest, a whine sounds like a bearing, not a belt itself.

The whine may be caused simply because it's a new belt and is putting different pressure on a bearing.

Some makes of car - such as BMW - say that the water pump should be changed along with the belt. Other makes recommend changing the idler/tensioner at the same time.

Check the tension... it could be too tight. If it is, it will put a load on the water pump and you might get a leak soon.

How old is the water pump? Cinq/Sei pumps seem to last okay but I'd change it every second cam-belt at least just to avoid problems.

Never changed the pump Ralf. Reason being the car is just got 37k on the clock and my reckoning is if anything is wants changed it would just be the belt due to age rather than wear. The old belt did look good. The new belt came with a new tensioner so thats been changed. Wife is away with the car later today so ill hang back and see if she thinks its loud as she drives it more than me so should be able to tell better.

Yes, you're right. At 37k the pump will be the original factory pump and there's not much wrong with those. If the whining seems loud to your missus, then re-check the belt tension but sometimes a new tensioner can also make a whine until the bearings settle in. It could quieten down after a hundred miles or so.

i find certain brands of belt whine more than others.

one of my cars has always had a bit of a whine from the belt, but its been like it since i built the engine and been fine so i dont worry about it.

Whine settling down. Need to do an oil change. MY mate did the last one when we did the head and i never noticed what he used on the sump plug. Can anyone tell me the hex size as i need to go buy one or point me in the direction of a preferred bolt head one.

From memory, I think the Allen key is 12mm (although I also have a 10mm one knocking about... ) If doesn't have any gasket or o-ring.

Ah good one cheers Ralf. I have a 12mm Allen (y)

BTW how much oil is in these things (1.1) with a filter change. Did i read that it was 3.5lt was was that a daft dream i had? :D

Near enough. I think it's 3.47 (as you do!) and an extra 300ml with the filter. If you have a 4ltr pack of oil, it'll be enough.
