Hi everyone :) I wondered if anyone could please help me with my exploding car?
So I've got a 2001 seicento sporting which was great up until I didn't use it for about 5 weeks straight because I had a works van to drive about in, when I came to use it again I did about 10 miles on the way to work and the red temperature warning light came on the dash but it got me to work then on the way home it came on again but with in seconds of me noticing it a black rubber hose under the bonnet exploded (4 way water/cooling pipe the small fat bit that runs in near the bottom of the engine) I changed the damaged section and filled the coolant and water back up but then I noticed underneath the engine towards the back on the passenger side dripping water out (with the ignition off) a few people have said it could be the water pump but from what I can work out the pump is on the other side of the engine to where its dripping from and also the engine is off and it still drips water

Pump is at the 'front' of the engine, which is on the driver's side of the car.
If the leak is behind the engine as you look at it, it could be a core plug in the block. These are dished metal plugs that fill holes necessary to clean out the casting sand when the block is manufactured. They can leak due to age, or due to overheat pressurisation.

You need to get in there with a torch and identify exactly where the water is coming out, then the right advice can be found here.

I haven't moved the car since replacing the hose and then seeing it pissing water out the bottom of the engine, I know the warning light means stop I wanted to know what possible things could be making the light to come on and why the pipe exploded :)

Hi, :)
I suspect you've NOT got a temp gauge.. so it's esentially an OVERHEATING warning light.

hose - have you replaced it.. ? what hose.., from your description I'm thinking thermostat area.

oil dribbling on the hoses - from leaky gaskets - can soften the "rubber" and they then balloon and burst., :(

Hi :) all I can say right now is its one of the 4 way hoses that runs into the bottom of the engine, I'm at work at the moment but I'll post some pictures later when i get home :)

As previously stated it could be a core plug or possibly heater matrix pipe? Hard to say without looking. But also as previously stated you may have cooked the engine, done the headgasket, by continuing to use it when the warning came on. If this happens again pull over as soon as it's safe and switch the engine off.

Is the water dipping out of the gearbox bell housing?

If that's on the right hand side as you look under the bumper then yes.
OK. You may, I say may because it's hard to say without looking, have a leak from the core plug behind the flywheel. I've just had to replace this on mine last week if it the problem. If there has only been water without any antifreeze in the engine the core plug rots away. If it is this it means gearbox out, clutch and flywheel off then pop out the old plug and fit a new one. New plug is only £5 from Fiat but it is a labour intensive job. This is what mine looked like

Ok thank you, could it be done by a novice? I say novice but I'm pretty good at taking things apart and putting back together again I've just never worked on a gearbox or flywheel before lol

Like I say it might not even be that. But if when you have a look you can't physically see the leak coming from anything above the gearbox then this core plug is more than likely the problem.
Make sure you really have a good look directly above the gearbox on the engine because this is where the thermostat housing is, there a big rubber water pipe going onto it, so obviously make sure it not leaking from there or anywhere else and then running down to the bottom of the gearbox.
Hope that makes sense.

I'd say no. Unless you have someone who is experienced and knows what they are doing to help you? If not it would be best taking it to a garage.

But like I said before you MUST be totally sure that it's not just a standard leak from somewhere/something else before committing to taking the gearbox off. It is a big job and unfortunately probably expensive in labour costs.

If it is that plug and you decide to pay a garage to do it buy a clutch kit, about £30, and get them to fit it at the same time. It won't cost you anymore in labour but may save you a fortune if the clutch goes 3mths after having the core plug replaced.

Good luck. ?
