Ok got to work this morning, and realised my car had begun to make that dreaded 'tap tap tap' noise from the top of the engine i hear so much about! This happened somewhere between leaving home and getting into the car park!

a) WTF is it
b) Is it seriously deadly (admittedly the car is due a service but it's gonna be traded in at the end of the month.)
c) Should i carry on driving it as normal?
d) WTF should i do now!

God i hate my car SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH. [xx(]

really concious of mine now....what noise is it? Mine has started to make a sort of metallic tap noise from the drivers side engine bay, only when it is cold though. Seems to disappear when it is warm.

Wanted: Cinq speaker grills, PM me

IT's just a light, constant 'tap tap tap' from the top of the engine, sounding like it's coming from the airfilter/box jobby bit. There's bulkage oil in the car still so it can't be that! I don't want it to die or even cost me money, it's gonna be my Punto deposit in 4 weeks!

Ifs an early 899 then the tappets are more than likey knacked. These are not cheap and still need adjusting/preloading .My recommendation is to go to scarp yard and find a later cing with modified non adjustable tappets, much better and like i say non ajustable.

I paid about £15 each new. You'll need all 8! You can't diagnose which one(s) are knackered as the throttle-body sits on the rocker cover and won't run without it[xx(], that's why you'll need to replace all 8.[xx(][xx(]

Coming soon: Cinq lower than a Prostitute's knickers!

You can fit the old style manual adjusting tappets from an old 903cc Panda, as the 899cc is the same lump reduced a few cc to meet a tax threshold in Italy.

YMMV

So it is.Still could be tappets though,or it could be the camshft jornals worn, these also make noise on higher milage cars, or one that have had bad oil in.

Mine is doing this now, and its lounder to the drivers side than the other. I can hear it in the car as well when idle.. "Groan" I really don't want to fork out alot for a new set anyways. How easy is it to replace them? If its easy enough I will go to the local scrap and get some from the smashed up sei's and do a DIY job?

You have to measure each clerance, the make sure its with values. If not work out how much out. Then pry down buckets, remove shim, measure that also, then add on tht amount which the clerance is out. Then you have get some new shim to that value. E.g 3.67mm,3.78mm.
