advice needed please my 1999 Seicento failed mot on :
rusty rear sub frame and shock absorbers
near and offside rusty inner sills
brake pipe corroded
rear wheel bearing rough and has excessive play
side indicator not working
headlamp insecure bulb holder lose inside
small exhaust leak
i am unable to do any repairs myself but as it only has 34,000 miles on the clock it is my life line for transport but only valued at £200 such a dilemma

I agree, sadly may be time to look for another car.
Once rust sets in it can quickly mount up and you could easily spend more fixing that than a replacement would cost.

:(

There are loads of nice cheap seicentos for sale with mot.

Unless your garage is not being honest then it sounds like its beyond economic repair. Cills will need welding although it might not be too serious... Perhaps take it somewhere else for a second opinion?

This would only be viable if you were doing the work yourself, & even then, only as a project & a work of love. Sadly for you as others have said its bite the bullet time & time to move onto something new. Just to put more bad news your way, even if you were able to do all the work, it would be off the road for some time & a financial disaster, at the end of it a car worth practically nothing.

I'm just giving you all the details as they are. It's of no help to yourself but I've kept some vehicles going in my time to the point of destruction, but that's a whole different story.

I usually take mine to council MOT stations, as they don't do any repairs they have no reason to 'suggest' repairs on the MOT as they don't get/do the work anyway.

Contact your local council to see if they have an MOT test station you can use. My local one is below:

MOT testing
You can get your vehicles MOT tested at our approved, fully independent test centre.

We test:

Passenger cars with up to 8 passenger seats, £53
Passenger vehicles with between 13-16 passenger seats: £56 (Class 5 MOTs)
Goods vehicles between 3000-3500kg Design Gross Weight: £57 (Class 7 MOTs)
All re-tests within 14 calendar days or 10 working days: £25
Test appointments are available Monday to Friday at 9am, 10am and 11am.

Please come to your appointment 10 minutes early to avoid the risk of postponement if you are late.

Please bring along your current MOT certificate.

Please note that we are independent, and do not carry out repair work.

It is dearer but I find they aren't likely to try and drum up any work.

I was giving my opinion on the premise that the OP had indeed actually looked under his vehicle & seen for himself that at the very least some work would have to be done to bring it up to MOT standard & would cost a bob or two. Now I'm only guessing as I've said, but where ever the car goes it will still need addressing one way or another. Then again without picture evidence who knows.

I know.

I was just pointing out that I don't get mine MOT'd at anywhere that does repairs as they aren't likely to suggest faults if they aren't doing any of the work to fix it.

Last garage i used quoted me 3 years in a row for a CV boot replacement and even stated the last time it was changed it was shoddy work. Soon changed their tune when I produced the reciept showing they had done the work on both occasions and this time it had better be done for free or trading standards would be getting involved.

I'm sure we all have different stories on this subject & at the risk of sounding obvious I'm referring & concentrating to the OP. Looking under the car & accessing whats required would give you some idea & the extent of corrosion etc. I honestly don't want to sound facetious, perhaps I'm being too obvious.

Not really. Too many people take garages words on faith, but I suppose it's down to how much they know about cars in the first place as to whether they accept what they are being told.

Sigh!! Forgive my obvious answers & my advise to the OP. Again I'm only guessing, but we really don't know what he thinks or surmises about cars full stop, but it really doesn't take much to actually look under a car. Even if you have limited knowledge, rusty sills & subframe are pretty much a give away.................ach I will bow out of this. I'm sure there will be a mate or family member giving advise right now.;)

I think you mis-understood my last post. When I started with 'Not Really' I was referring to your point about being too obvious. I was actually agreeing with you, just didn't look like it due to my not wording it properly.

'rusty' means the tester is having a bad day and padding his fail sheet out...
I had a spotty youth tester who gave me an advisory on rusty springs one year 'cos he couldn't find anything else to whinge about lol

'corroded to excess' - is another matter - but I don't see this here...

Here's a perfectly good little car showing normal wear and tear :)
you need to find another test station!
either get some grease on that brake pipe (or get it replaced, though he's not saying '...to excess') sort the wheel hub in question (an easy DIY - available on eBay) get a bulb in the side repeater, make sure the bulb in headlamp is secure (it will be something very simple!) and bung some gun gum in exhaust - shouldn't cost more than a hundred quid and it's worth it on a 34k car! Then get the exhaust sorted when next possible and find someone prepared to get some waxoyl on your rusty bits so it doesn't become 'corroded to excess' on next MOT (y)

Thanks have car at local independant mechanics now replacing headlight with one from scrap dealer bearings done and rusty parts waxoyled as advised hope it will pass re-test he says he prefers slight leak on exhaust to let condensation out but mot put it on advisory so will keep an eye on it
thanks for the advise always a great help
