Fault occurring when moving suggests more likely to be clutch dragging, or low oil level.
To answer your earlier question, yes, I mean the gearbox oil level.

I'd expect the gearbox to be similar to the Punto. Recently a friend had a gearbox fail on his Punto because the nut on the end of the gearbox shaft had come loose. Sadly found too late to save the box, but you might be lucky if you get the end cover off and check.

Mount came yesterday but way to wet to do anything outside. NOt had the chance to look yet but i presume i can safely just unbolt and pry out the old one and a simple replace in reverse.

The trick when fitting is to move the engine to help re-align the holes. Screw driver on the holes first also helps...

When driving i sometimes struggle to get the car in 5th. Parked at the side of the road with engine running or not the gear stick will select any gear no problem. Any ides?

Am i right in thinking one cable do three gears and the other does the other three and if this is the case why is it only difficult to get 5th and not the other two it works?

Oh and if the cable is buggered what one am i changing. Standing looking at the gearbox from the front of the car do i need the closest or furthest away cable?
had the same problem, removed the gear stick gaiter so I could see the plastic mounting where the gear lever goes into Tried to get 5th gear and found the plastic housing split at the bolt hole Hold the plastic housing down and then try it, if it goes into 5th gear try it without holding the plastic down you should see the split

I dug this old thread out as i still have this 5th gear issue. Difficult so select when hot yet pull over and its fine when sitting at the side of the road. There is no right movement when selecting fifth, feels just like going into third. Mount changed, Oil changed, Un convinced its the cable due to only one gear problem.

I am trying to decide if i should scrap this car or not. Yesterday it was getting scrapped in 12 month but now i have my resat MOT and seen the rust on the floor/sill areas i thik i can fix this but......... Not if the gearbox is gone. I think i may have a head issue as well but i could get a 2nd hand one cheap enough so that is no great issue. The car is still quite nice and only just turned 40k so if i can fix all issues for around £400 ill keep it longer than the year.

From your description above,it sounds like linkage or 5th gear problem. Adjust the linkage so the lever moves toward first gear,so giving you more distance between third and fifth gears.

end of day, a gearbox issue is hardly worth scrapping the car over, get a replacement one for next to nothing - couple of hours to swap it over.

tbh if you are convinced its an issue with the box itself i'd just not bother messing with it and just swap it, whack new clutch kit on at same time.

Not sure how to do that as i presumed they were just cables that stretch and replace. Ill look through guides when i have more time tonight.

Few other issues. I failed the MOT on welding. Did a quick cover up on teh back arch to get the MOT but an advisory was the floor where it meets the sills and i was under the car when it was up on the ramp at MOT station and it looks like the front end will be lucky to last the year. I dont mind stripping the car out and welding it up but only if the rest is fine. Gearbox and head is giving me concern. Head was pitted where the gasket pot rings sit at number one. Cleaned up as best as i could but car feels like its missing when first fired up in the morning so im thinking possibly water is getting through. So end of day if box is shot, head wants work ad the welding i could get another car probably cheaper (Another Seicento) So i have 12 month to decide, well six as i dont want to be welding in crap weather next year so would rather do it this summer hence digging this gearbox post back up. May try a thicker oil as the problem is only when hot.

Quick check if it's linkage, lift the reverse collar up then put it in fifth,if it goes in every time,it a movement/linkage problem,so narrowing it down and box need not come out.

Lifting the collar put it in reverse every time. The strange thing i have the H movement for 1,2,3, and 4 but no right motion for fifth so hit and a miss if it goes in but i have the right motion for reverse. Park up at side of road i get all gears all the time and i have the full five gear motion. This only happens when driving and when hot.

So nothing i did made a difference and gearbox was still acting as it should (On good days) Then i found this. I presume bracket A is meant to be held in place with nut B. Not put it on yet as i had no tools with me when i took the picture.
