Tuning Sprint & Hillclimb spec Cinquecento

When's your first event? You're fairly local to me and I've been thinking about entering my Sei sporting on a couple of sprints in the road going class, so very interested to see how you get on. With me I'll be totally outclassed as it's too big for the 1000cc category (so will sit with the 1.4's) but should be fun none the less.

I used to run my rally car in the modified 1400 class and it was a tough job! Plenty of highly tuned minis/ MG Sprites with fibreglass panels etc. Not sure if it's part of the series but if you get a chance to do Rushmoor arena at the end of April it's a good event and not a million miles from you.

It's now looking like the Rushmoor Arena Sprint on April 24 will be my first event, there is a Sprint at Goodwood on the April 23 but it's not part of the championship that I'm entering.

I've checked out previous Rushmoor Arena Sprints on YouTube and the course looks Ok.

I've also now got the Cinq booked in for its MSA Competion Car Log Book inspection with my local Scrutineer who lives in Hastings, this is organised for March 23.

I have found a supplier of fibreglass panels in Italy via one of the Facebook Cinquecento groups, he does bonnets, front wings, doors and hatches. This will be something to look into at the end of this year as with the start of the season looming I've got other more important things that need buying (crash helmet, HANS device, race suit & gloves).

You got any links or contact details for the Italian fibreglass maker?

Hi Duncan, the only contact details I have is the sellers name which is David Benke, he runs the Trofeo & Co Facebook group so you might be able to contact him through FB.

Which championship are you in? ACSMC or ASEMC?

Rushmoor is my home event (FDMC member) but i'm not sure i'll be able to make this one

I'm running in the Sevenoaks Motor Club speed League.
Seems I won't be the only Cento there as there's a Seicento entered in the production class.

The first outing in the Sprint & Hillclimb was held a couple of weekends ago at Rushmoor near Aldershot.
It went quite well apart from an annoying misfire which I think was down to the Lucas coil top being cracked, I've now thrown it away and swapped over to a Panda 4x4 electronic distributor and and a Fiat Croma coil (N.O.S. £2 from eBay).
Considering this was the first time out the Cinq handled and stopped quite well and the Avon tyres gripped better than expected from cold.

This video is from the first practice run, lots of wheel spin and some sideways action.

This video is my 5th and fastest run.

Lots has happened since my last post.
With a lot of expert help from Jon Wood at JW Developments in Eastbourne we now have a race cam installed, the cam was designed by Jon and then ground from a new blank. Jon also sourced some lightweight cam follower buckets that don't use a separate shim to set the tappet clearances, these were thought to be necessary due to the possibility of the new cam spitting the standard Fiat shims off of the Fiat followers buckets.Uprated single valve springs were also installed.
With the new cam installed with a vernier pulley and the Panda 4x4 distributor (now modified for Mechanical advance only) and with the Croma coil a short dyno run has seen the power increase to 103bhp so that's an increase of 17bhp over the 866 cam setup.

I also took part in the Abingdon Car-nival Sprint on Saturday (04/06) at Dalton Barracks Airfield in Oxfordshire where the new power increase got me two 4th places so things are definitely going in the right direction.

Here's a quick update......
The season ended on a high with a proper battle for a class 2nd place between my Cinq and an established competitor in a very well set up 1380 MG Midget....i ended up 3rd by just over a second.
This event was at Rushmoor Arena the same venue as my first Sprint this year so I was able to get a direct time comparison, my first practice run in patchy damp conditions was quicker than my fastest time at the previous visit so I was very happy.
Over this winter weve got a lot planned for the car to make it more competitive next year, the list of jobs is quite long so there'll be lots of time in the garage.
We're building a new 1108 based engine and have lots of things planned for it so watch this space.
The RAC MSA class rules allow for some major suspension mods so we'll be exploiting this to the full with a lightweight custom rear beam with tubular trailing arms and turreted coilover shocks to replace the standard Cinq beam setup.
The MSA class rules also allow for some serious body mods to reduce the weight further, we are hoping to get down to 580ish Kg.

The engine mods will be....
Increase in capacity.
Big race cam.
Ported P75 head with bigger valves.
36mm bike carbs on a custom manifold.
Lightened and balanced rods, crank and flywheel.
Lots of internal mods to control the oil splash and mist.

This engine will be built to rev to over 9000rpm, my current one hits 8300rpm and still has the 55,000 mile completely standard road car bottom end it came out of the factory with.

It's been a while so here's an update.
The planned 36mm bike carbs have been changed to twin 40 Dellorto DHLA's with 36mm chokes, to fit these to the head I fabricated an inlet manifold

Time for an update.
The planned new engine is taking longer than expected due to delays caused by one of the engineering suppliers but hopefully the engine will be completed, installed and dyno'd by the end of May.
The crankshaft, cam pulley, lightened flywheel and clutch cover are currently being balanced, we have had the pistons, con rods and crank assembled in the block to measure how much to machine off the top of the block to get the piston crown protruding the correct amount at TDC.
I'm trying to find a gearbox to fit Quaife diff into to increase grip with the expected power increase but aren't having much luck, I need a 5 speed Punto or Seicento that has a 4.06:1 diff ratio but must have a bolted fitting crownwheel......anyone got one??.
I managed to loose another 34kg of weight out of the car by "interpreting" the RAC MSA Blue Book regs to suit me, I've removed the inner wings in front of the strut mounts leaving the chassis legs and removed the front panel and replaced with a tubular support frame for the radiator and bumper. Ive also removed the rear hatch slam panel and gutted the hatch inner skin and replaced the window glass with perspex.
The biggest task was to make tubular rear trailing arms with adjustable mounts and turreted coilover rear shocks to replace the complete standard rear suspension setup, this was done to loose more weight and give multiway adjustability. I used current Panda rear hubs as the have 4 bolt fixing, I then bolted them to a jig frame long with the body mount and basically joined them together with 32mm seamless steel tubing and used M12 rose joints for the adjustable arm pivots.
I've competed in one Sprint so far this season and was beaten into third place by 0.04 of a second by a well sorted 1380 MG Midget, the class was won by a Imp engined Clan Crusader on super sticky Avon slicks. During this event the rear crank oil seal decided to start leaking so this has now been replaced, while the gearbox was out I checked to see what fitting the Cinq Sporting crownwheel was......yep it's pushed on.......dohh!!!.
The car is now nearly ready for it next outing on Sunday 23rd April at Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot, after this I don't have anything planned for May as hopefully the new engine will be completed and being fitted along with the Quaife diff if a suitable gearbox can be found.
