Sorry to have to ask a question that's probably been asked so many times before. I've tried the search but it's not much use.

I probably need a replacement gearbox for my Cinq as it recently seems to have started making a noise it shouldn't.

Anyway....

I read in the last week or two someone mentioned number, eg 531 or 315 or something, for a just right gearbox. IIRC, that was a version of Punto Mk2 6 speed.

What would that number have been please? :)

Alternatively, can I obtain and replace the input bearing (was suggested, I have no clue as to the noise) on the Cinq 5 speed box? Impossible to do? Not worth the effort?

Thanks.

The Mk2 petrol has 2 variants. C.514.5.10, 5 speed and C.514.6.10, 6 speed.
The Mk1 I am not sure on what variants. The ratios between the 1100 and 1242 16v 6 speed may vary but are C.514 type.
You can also use a gearbox from a new shape Panda. I fitted one to mine off a ~2006 1.1 model.

Not making a race car. Replacing with a 6 speed appears to be the popular thing to do.

Shorter ratios in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, will make it generally a little bit faster unless rev'ing all the way to 7000rpm through the gears. I ever fit 14" wheels it'll make up for the otherwise 4%, or so, drop in speed up. Slightly longer 6th (than existing 5th) may mean a little quieter motorway cruising, more so with larger wheels.

The extra gear, 5th, might make for slightly faster motorway overtaking. But I very rarely go on the motorway. It's perhaps meant for hauling five people and luggage up a motorway hill in a Punto.

On Clubcento, maybe here, someone published a list of ratios for Punto 55/60/75 and top speeds with the 13 inch wheels. Quite a lot lower for the 55 and 75, eg, 93mph at 6000rpm in 6th. Meant for 15 or 16 inch wheels perhaps. Longer for the 60.

The downsides are that I don't want to lose steering lock nor faff around with the rack to fit a spacer that I'd have to get made by someone somewhere somehow.

Thanks for all the info. :) That could be my best choice to use a newer box from a Panda.

Was that a five speed? Were the ratios the same as the Cinq?

The Panda gearbox is a 5 speed and works really well with my 1242 engine.
Not sure about the ratios but seems better than my old C.514.5.13 Seicento sporting box.
