Hello all,
noticed in Asda today that their own brand fully synthetic oil is £15 for 5 litres on 5w/30, £14 for 10w/40, £19 for VW 5w/30 and £11 for semisynth 10/40. Prices from memory but I think I have them about right.
They have their oil labelled as for Ford, GM/Vauxhall, Volkswagen etc nowadays. Eurocarparts seem to do that too. No idea what the difference is, if any, so wouldn't know which to choose for Fiat but I'm sure someone will let us know.
Hope this helps someone out,
Ian.

I personally wouldn't touch supermarket oil with the pole from a barge, but in the spirit of each to their own.

Different manufacturers call for different oil, because they use modern three part particulate filters and cats. Certain additives are either required or not desired, in order to meet drain times and emittion control. That's it basically.

Any of the oil you mentioned should be fine for an older single cat car.

Also, I know a chap who owns a local oil distribution company. He said don't be fooled into buying oil specifically for petrol and diesel cars, there is no difference.

alot of oils come from the same place, just with different containers. supermarket oil is fine. more important is keeping up with the change schedule. changing the oil more frequently with cheaper oil is better than leaving the oil in for longer with expensive oil imo.

i was told that diesel oils have higher amounts of detergents in? dont know how true this actually is though?

A company called comma, who are quite well known for making oil.
Well they used to make a green two stroke oil, for everything from strimmers to two stroke bikes. I have lost count how many engines I have had to rebuild because of that stuff. Killed one engine in a masonry chainsaw on the first day it was used from new.

Also had a barrel of rock oil for the four strokes that was listed as having a higher spec than the Fuchs we usually used. All of a sudden engines started smoking and blowing up. Went back to Fuchs and the problem stopped.

So yes it does make a difference what brand you use. Best thing to do would be to find out who bottles the oil for Asda. Oil change intervals are defiantly the most important thing to follow and owt is better than nowt.

But for a few quid more, I would rather put decent oil in. Same with supermarket fuel. Quite a few cars around here have been cooking injectors and accumulators because of morrisons or tesco fuel.

My cb400 hates tesco petrol. I had to put some in after my tap stopped working on reserve and I was pushing it. Ran like a bag of spanners until I stuck some shell back in it.

You don't have to buy mega expensive oil like putoline, or repsol. But rather than take the chance, I would use these.

1: castrol, 2: valvolene, 3:havolene, 4: Fuchs aka Silkolene, 5: Mobil 1.

I have used all of the above in my time and have had no complaints.

1: carplan, 2: comma, 3: halfords, 4: rock oil, 5: tesco.

I have had problems with. On cars, bikes and stationary engines.

Do what I do, find an oil distributor and buy from them. Better oils and cheaper too.

The "budget" brand Triple Qx that the likes of Eurocarparts sell is actually made by Shell, so is surprisingly decent.

I wouldn't touch carplan or comma anything tbh.

Oh dear, I forgot that innocently making a post to save people money would provoke such reactions. I wasn't recommending Asda oil, I was simply letting people know it was on offer.

Now, for what it is worth I have an 899 Seicento with 108,000 miles on the clock which has run on Asda oil for a few years now. I may have used some Triple QX from EuroCarParts once or twice when it was on an offer too good to resist but generally I have used the Asda because it is cheap but meets or is approved to certain specs and I am happy with that. I always use fully synthetic and change once a year, usually just before my MOT. Once a year or so Asda also offer Castrol at bargain prices and I have posted about that too.

A quick Google on the subject shows me that some previous Asda oils were made by Exxon/Mobil.

So if you are happy to use Asda oil, buy it now whilst it is cheap.

Ian.
