Hello there,

was just wondering if anyone could help explain the difference between a pure hydraulic lifter system and one that requires the preload?

Got my rocker cover off last weekend to clean the tappets (they were making a noise) and had problems seeing how to get them out for a clean/fill (it was a bit mucky in there).

Any help please?

Thanks,

Jonathan

If it is the original engine, it won't have the preload type.
They changed to pure hydraulic without adjustment towards the end of the Cinq.
The preload type have adjusters on the other end of the rocker.

Yep, got the old cinq manual which is great.

Where i got lost was I was hoping to be able to take the actual tappets out of the rocker arm to clean them and fill them etc...

In the manual for the preload type it says there is a circlip and shim to remove to get the tappets out but i couldn't see these on the pure type so am a bit miffed!

Cheers,

Jonathan

If you can find a set, the old Panda engines had non-hydraulic ones which can be retrofitted.
Yep, I did that to mine.
A member in the Panda section on here spotted one in a scrapyard local to me.

Took some time to clean up & prep the Panda bits as it clearly hadn't had an oil change for a VERY long time (more treacle than oil).
Pay special attention to the oil ways in the rocker shaft, I couldn't even see them, so they needed unblocking.

Once installed and adjusted though they work well and considerably quieter than the original hydraulic ones were!

I'd expected them to need adjusting after a while, but I haven't touched them since.
