Recent replace of rear shocks and fitting of Powerflex bushes has made an 90%
improvement in the rear end rattles and rumbles...

However, I've still got a clunk from the nearside rear when hitting a grate hole or whatever.
Had it up on the ramps and checked the torque of all the bolts I undid and all those
are fine.
Shook the exhaust from here to eternity and that doesn't hit anything. Spring is intact and seems to be seated properly.
Shook the wheel and there seems to be no play in the bearings. All the wheel nuts are tight. Bumper is fixed solid. Boot is empty with no spare wheel whilst testing.
So, it's a head scratcher:confused:
Next thing is to run it with the back door open a bit in case its rattling on it's lock
or something. Can't make the car clunk by bouncing that rear quarter...
No noise at all from the offside.

Any ideas I might have missed?

My cinq has all new suspension and it's still more rattly and clonky that my 25 year old Toyota on knackered original suspension. I just assumed that was how they are?

Same for mine. Changed literally everything on the front and rear suspension. All I can assume is it is the exhaust. But even that is all brand new Inc mounts. I just live with it.

Thanks for the responses guys....

The front stuff is fairly intact but it's all being replaced when the weather improves.. Still 99% sure it's a rear end clunk though..............

Re the handbrake cables, yes, I found a clip undone and the rattle it made when I shook it made me think I'd found the problem. Re clipped it and still got the clunk.

Re the petrol tank.....interestingly, it did rattle when I was bashing everything whilst underneath the car on ramps. Had somebody else bash the tank whilst I sat in the car. You can hear it but it's not the "clunk"...

Soon as I get a dry spell, I'm going to get it up on the ramps again. A guy suggested hitting the tyre with a lump hammer, upwards from the bottom through the gap in the ramp bars to better simulate riding a grate hole....makes sense I suppose..
Anyhoo, it's hiding but I'll find it:idea:

Hi there
looks like yove tied everything
odd rattled ive had in the past after doing pretty much the same as you:
Replacement fuel tank sender unit fitted and "mechanic" who had done it left the old float in the tank which had fell off!
Bolt securing brake bsckplate to stub axle had fallen out and wad rattling inside drum
Try bashing the rear silencer - have the baffles broken loose?
Oddest one of all on a brand new Rover SD1after dealer had given up - milk bottle left in chassis rail by assembly worker !

Exhaust is new front to back (3 months old) with new rubber hangers.
Can't make it rattle by shaking it but I'll bash the silencer next time under....
None of the exhaust brackets are catching body work or heat shield..

Listening to it, you'd swear it needed new arm bushes:bang:

Loving the milk bottle rattle, was it gold top?

Thanks again guys

everything you say sounds just like my knocking arb bush mate.. i too thought rear bushes, wasn't that. Changed just about everything on the car and it was still there, swapped the arb bushes and it disappeared. It really sounds stupid but i would have bet money it was the rear arm bushes by the noise and have no idea how an arb bush could sound like that but its the only thing i changed that day and it stopped clunking.. Do keep us posted on this though, be interested to know what it is when you eventually find it - I have a knock like this on my suzuki atm - difference is the parts are not cheap so don't fancy just starting going through every bush like i would on a cento haha..

Yes, sound advice about the ARB bushes...
In fact my next stage of this project will be to change them and both sides struts and
bearings. Getting the bits together for that job now. Front arms are only about a year old and look good..

Still got to make sure it's not the back door bumping on it's catch or something daft then I'll let it go till I do the front stuff....
Will post any findings good or bad...

Thanks
Phil

my arb bushes were utter crap and they never made a noise. to clunk there must be no bushes left!!!!

ive replaced pretty much everything under the car so nothing is loose or worn. like i said, i just put up with it. i think its just normal for them to be rattly and clonky!
