My seicento overheated for the first time last night the cooling tank started to steam and bubble when i romoved the cap. i put a litre of water in but after 10 miles it happened again. i have flushed the cooling system compleately including the rad and checked for leaks but still the same problem after seconds! i also noticed the rad is still cold where the rest of the system is boiling then i took out the thermastat out and now water gets to the rad gets really hot but the fan doesnt kick in at all and the bubbling and steaming still happens. I have looked at past message boards and tried fixing it but nothing works can anyone help me????? please!!!!!! i am convinced it cannot be the head gasket wrong symptoms? PLEASE HELP THANKS!

ok being blond now mpi & spi? also whats the best way to check the fan i know you use a 12v battery but how?

right SPI is single point injecton.MPI is multipoint injection, this has 4 injectors over the SPI's 1.
you need to get power into the fans power connection.
the way i would do it is connect a wire to the + terminal of the battery and one to the - of the battery. now you connect these tothe 2 connctions of the fan,if it doesnt work then swap over the wires to check the +/- are correct

will check fan in a min just took it for a short run after i have taken out the stat and it still got hot but not boiling hot fan still didnt kick in. does this give you any ideas. if so y would both the fan and the stat go at the same time?

Possibly your fan has not operated when it should. The resultant overheating can jam the thermostat. Had a discussion about thermostats with my engine builder today. When he gets a fire engine in that has overheated he does not return the thermostat to the customer because he knows they will just fit the old one again. They do jam shut so need a new one after an overheating incident.

Does your engine look like this

If not you have an SPI seicento. Made in 2000 i would say that yours is an SPI

thanks mine must be be an spi has different air filter rest looks same can send photo if you want also any tips on a easy way to check fan as its a sporting its an absolute nightmare to get to becasue of that damn bumper. is there a more direct route?

does it have the big black rocker cover on the engine, if not it is definately an SPI as that pic of mine is a standard MPI engine

As for engine bits itself im no expert on that side of things, but im sure the others will be along later who will help you out :)

Ok, lets assume its an SPi. Take the electrical connector of the nearside end of the radiator, open a paperclip and insert into the plug. With the ignition on (I know some models will do it without) the fan should run. If it does not, check the fuse in the fusebox. If it does run, but the paperclip glows then the fan has failed as its not turning quickly enough to cool the engine.

Start from there and report back.

If the fan is running but not when the radiator gets hot, then the sensor in the side of the radiator is under suspicion. Take it out, get a multi meter and a cup of boiling water and check that it goes closed circuit when the end is in the boiling water.

If it does, then refit and refill the coolant system, making sure its bled properly.

I suspect that the damage has already been done, but if the switch is faulty fit a new one and try again.

Had an overheating problem when I first got the car. New rad and thermostat sorted out the problem. I know you said you've flushed the system but what condition is the rad in? I know my new one is already taking a battering from stones on the road etc.

The Rad Is in perfect condition sounds like we have cracked it with the censor and the stat will check the sensor and report back to you all tomorrow for now i am going to take it for a run with the fan on constantly and the stat out and see if it overheats if it doesnt problem solved thanks for all your help guys and will let you know 2morrow! :)

Hmm...Water boils at 100 deg C yes, Boris?

cento fan comes on between 90 deg C and 110 deg C. Rad leaks will cause water to boil off and fly from front of car (my 899cc drank 10L of water in 50miles on friday :) - one blown rad).

Try adding the 60/40 mix of coolant / water to help raise the cooling fluid's BP. That may help things.

Dacater - Hope the fix goes well but sounds like a bleeding problem too from your initial post, make sure the heater workers on warm as it should and use both bleed points to get all the air out.
