I own a 'R' reg Cinq Sporting and am hoping for some advice... it was stolen recently and when we recovered it a lot of damage had been done to the steering column and the ignition system. My local garage have quoted me the following (before VAT):

Ignition Switch £58.43
Code Kit £156
Aerial Ignition £20
2 Plastic Covers £9.93
Nearside Door Glass £163
Labour £75
Collection £45

Please could anyone advise me if this is a reasonable quote? I'm not happy with the price of the door glass and have found one secondhand for about £30 but is there anything I can do about the price of the ignition parts? I'm not exactly knowledgeable about cars so any help would be very much appreciated!

you could get a mckrich chip(see cinq FAQ's)which would increase performance and disable the code system so you could forget about the code kit etc.you could either get the new ignition barrel or try to get one with a key from the scrappies.

im assuming the chip will do this for you but double check with mckrich :)

It would be cool to cut out the cost of the code kit. Especially as I don't have the red key for the car anyway.

My problem is that the car is with the garage at the moment and so I can't see what is still intact in the car... If the code box has been damaged/removed can the car run without one completly? Also will my car need the ignition aerial if the immobiliser is disabled?

Forgive my ignorance in this subject - I've been struggling to understand how the whole thing works.

Glass £163! WTF!

Shop around and even at a scrappy you could manage one for £15. Get yourself and ignition switch whilst your there and a mckrich chip and it would be ok I think.

They didn't get it started, they rolled it down the hill and dumped it at the local train station. :bang:

Edit:
My local garage have said they're happy for me to buy the parts and they'll fit them, that if I buy an ignition barrel, ignition switch and the window that should get it going if the immobiliser (sp?) can be bypassed.

Will a 1995 lockset would work on a 1998 Sporting?

(Crosses fingers that car won't be scrapped after all!)

Now that would be perfect, shame there's still three days to go. Will have to keep an eye on that one. Many thanks :)

Hi there,

I'm trying to fix up my cinquecento after it got broken into, I would really appreciate some advice from you on the cheapest/best way to get my ignition system back together. I've got a mechanic who's willing to fit the parts but I want to make sure I buy the correct ones.

Would a chipped lockset etc with ecu from a 1996 n/ reg. 900cc Cinq work in a 1998 r/reg 1108cc Cinq Sporting?

Theres a bit more information on this thread about it all. Any advice you could give me would be really appreciated!

1. some late 97/98 cinqs have the seicento steering wheel and steering column. The lock barrels are different. Best to check some photos on the web to see what yours is.

2. I don't think a 899 ECU will work with a sporting.

3. If you use my chip in your existing car it will disable the immobiliser. i.e. any key that will turn the ignition lock will start the car. Given your recent experience you may want to fit an after market immobiliser. If you get an alarm of ebay you can add remote locking as well.

Regards,

michael

Does anyone have any tips for how exactly I tell which steering column I have and thus which locks etc. I should buy?!

I've uploaded some pictures of the damage and the car beforehand. I also included one of the interior when it was intact, I don't know if its possible to tell the type from any of these pics?! Any advice would (as usual) be much appreciated!

cinqysxmk2; Thank you for the offer - I'll get in touch with you when/if I need any bits and pieces!

I've found the glass for £30 now so thats a big improvement, just need to get the correct parts for the steering column now.

I really appreciate all the help from everyone - Without this place the car would be on its way to the scrapheap already. (y)

I've just got off the phone from my local FIAT dealers who deny that Seicento columns were ever put in Cinquecentos and tell me that the previous owner must have done it as a cheap fix. They quoted me £900 including labour

just ask them to confirm, as you have the Sei Steering wheel and wiper switches ec it could be some half way job where it keeps the Cinq column but uses the Sei shrouds or something as te shrouds around teh column are diff.

I don't recall anyone investigating this, but maybe someone with more knowledge will know, I've never compared the 2 cars together to know.

Aaron.

I'm going to try and keep my own locks and ECU after all as it turns out no damage has been done to the barrel itself, hopefully it can be rescued! My code block and ignition aerial are also both intact (Thank God).

Lets hope the plastic surround/steering lock part isn't too expensive - although knowing fiat it will be!
