Guys..
Just to confirm, is this the type of blue key that costs a fortune to get
a spare cut....

Well, more than the "code 1" type. Shop around.

Cheers(y)
Will have a trudge around the key cutters...
Main reason I need one is for opening the door locks in Winter when they
are a bit stubborn..don't want to risk the old key too much.
I presume the door locks don't care if the key is coded or not..

-these are the little boogers that cause all the problems. Each code2 key has a transponder hidden inside it & it's matched to the code reader & ECU.
As you pointed out you can get a standard key cut & use that for opening frozen door locks, the transponder only needs to be close to the ignition switch to start the car.
Some people tape it to the steering column but then you have disabled the immobiliser for anyone trying to nick the car . You could always dig out the transponder from the key & attach it to something you will always have with you when you're driving.... or even have it surgically implanted -they do it to cats.
I could even pop round & re-engineer a door with the circuit from an electronic cat flap so you won't need a front door key anymore :D

Which part of me would need the implant though....
Theres only so much of you that can be slapped against the switch whilst driving:D
