Hi, can anyone help? My daughter's just about to w on honeymoin in their Sei - a 2001 mpi, suddenly today apparently in traffic it started to screech, then screeched fairly often in heavy traffic not ling after the cooling fan went off? ?

The cooling fan's fine sping freeky and comes on when necessary - we've just run it up outside the house tonight.

Any thoughts? ?

Im worried - they'll be driving a few hundred miles there and then sround and then drivinv home all in all a fair few miles. Will it all end in catastrophe or does the screeching point towards possibly the alternator and if so do you think it will last a few weeks??

Please help.

Jon :)

Let the car warm up and then Check your cooling fan or alternator belt.
If its the fan try some spray oil at it. if its the belt adjust the alternator to take up the slack.

Presuming you are getting the screech in relation to engine revs and not wheel-speed, which seems likely...

the most common culprit is a loose alternator belt, followed by either alternator or waterpump bearing.

The belts go loose pretty easily and then screech. Does is screech continuously or itermittently, only when the alternator is working?

I would try a very quick squirt of WD40 on the belt. If this instantly fixes or changes the screech, it will be the belt. If there is no difference, you may be able to get WD40 into the bearings of alternator/water pump. Try each in turn and see if there is any difference to noise.

hope this helps

Brilliant thanks guys. The noise appeared yo start just after the cooling fan stopped. Cheers Jon
