Hi, long story but... I have a 2002 (Phoebe) sporting which I absolutely:worship: The start of my saga was when my step dad drained and changed the coolant, he spilt a little of it in the engine and gave it a quick hose off.

The following day she was running lumpy after checking the plugs and leads for water (not the problem) she still ran awful. A friend used his tester thingy and it came up with the idle air control malfunction (the yellow engine light is lit on the dash display)

I got a replacement throttle body on fleabay which when fitted made the car rev up and down on its own.

I bought a second throttle body (fleabay) in case the first was faulty but car still runs rough except for when the air idle sensor is disconnected, then it runs fine.

Yesterday I undid the bolts which hold the throttle body to the engine to check the gasket, which looked ok. when I tightened the bolts back down one snapped off:bang: Step dad got it out with his screw extractors.

I now cannot find a bolt like it anywhere and the car still runs rough with sensor plugged in.

Any help and ideas would be most appreciated.

Welcome to the forum :) Sounds like you're coming to us a little late, but better late than never!

RE: The spilled coolant, I wouldn't worry. Unless there's more to this story, he won't have spilled it IN the engine, but rather just ON the engine, which is absolutely fine.

It sounds less like the sensor itself is at fault, and might possibly be an issue with one of the earthing points. I'm not 100% sure myself where these are, but there is a technical manual in the Downloads section - so your step-dad can spend some time browsing through that.

Regarding the screw, they're nothing special just long. I can't remember the thread pitch off the top of my head but once you know that you should be able to find something very easily.

Bit strange 3 dodgy Throttle bodies!
The usual suspect for the revs going up & down is a split in one of the hoses or air getting into the system somewhere so check the hoses first.
Idle valves do get stiff sometimes so it's worth giving it a squirt of carb cleaner. If it's still showing 'idle air control malfunction: fault code PO505' then....
Borrow/beg/steal a multimeter.
Tease out the green rubber waterproof bung on the sensor.
Reconnect the sensor turn the ignition on but don't start the engine.
Red wire with green stripe should read 5volts
Green wire with black stripe should read about 0.4v & it will rise to around 5v as you open the throttle.
Black wire should be around 0.4ohms resistance if my memory serves me well.

If all this started after washing the engine bay.... First thing I would do is stop swapping parts put it back how it was......

Next I would get a big can of wd40 and remove every electrical plug / lead I can find and douse in wd40 before putting it back together including ht leads coils crank sensors......
