Re: doggy sei , any ideas?

shouldn't really rev it loads as soon as you start it mate, let it try and idle before you do that.
but then evry car is different i guess

Yeah, it's a very good idea to let the oil get to the engine first. I don't know how much he was revving it either, but if it was 'loads' then you wouldn't want to do that until it had fully warmed up.

I always blip the rev's a little when I start up the car, a bit of a habit I guess. Only about 4k, nothing serious.

On a similar note, does anyone know if pushing the clutch down when starting the engine is beneficial? I do that aswell, again as a habit

You really shouldn't touch the throttle at all. The ECU will sort out starting the engine and establishing an idle. 4K is way too high to be revving a cold engine, 2K is more than enuff.

Two trains of thought on this.

1) Pushing the clutch when starting will take the gearbag out of the equation and stop any drag from the gears slowing the crank speed down. However, how much drag can there be from gears in finest hypoid oil.

2)Pushing the clutch can also mean you are pushing the crank against the thrust washer increasing drag rather than reducing it.

In my opinion, don't touch the clutch after you have returned the car to neutral.

Cheers

Re: doggy sei , any ideas?

It's generally recommended that you don't exceed 3000rpm with a cold engine, but ideally you wouldn't even rev it that much. 4000rpm is far too much!

I'm not sure about pressing the clutch pedal when you start, but that's what I've been taught at my local IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) group. I have wondered whether it is actually beneficial, and will probably query it some time.

Re: doggy sei , any ideas?

The IAM have never heard of a thrust bearing.
