My 2001 Seicento overheated and after a few months of screeching noise, I want to change the water pump to see if that was the cause. Two questions:
1. Can anyone tell me why I cannot find a Haynes manual for this vehicle? The only book version is for a Cinquicento up to 1998, and teh only online version I can find is for a Punto? Does a manual exist?
2. Are there two types of water pump for a Seicento? I have read on here the "how to replace a water pump", but teh water pump shown looks different to the type I found when searching for the part I need. Because I don't know what it looks like, I can't know which to buy. Could someone show me a picture of what a water pump looks like on a 2001 Seicento please?
Thanks.
Andrew

Screeching noise is much more likely to be the alternator belt (or the alternator itself) or the cam belt tensioner. Obvious way to proceed is to take off the alternator belt, see if the noise persists.

Haynes never did a manual. One of the Porter manuals covers the Sei, but. but, the Seicento Technical Manual is free, gratis and fer nowt in the Downloads Library here. You'll need something like WinRAR (free) to unpack it.

All 1108 Sei/Cinq pumps are the same. The 899 one is utterly and completely different.

Thank you,
I am tipping that it is the waterpump because I altered the tightness of the fan belt and also lubricated it, but it made no difference to whether the screeching happened. Then, while driving, the overheat light came on, the car cut out before I could get back home (with smoke coming from the bonnet), and the cooling system was empty. This was in December and I have not touched the car since.
It has been a great car, so I am now attempting to diagnose what was wrong and to fix it. My first thought was to replace the waterpump and fill the cooling system to test it. If you can suggest anything else, then I'd be grateful.
As to the Manuals being available to download from here. Will you please tell me exacty where I'll find them, as I'm new to the site and I've searched but cannot find a "downloads" section.

Oh, I forgot, it is the 899 Seicento. The water pump replacement tutorial on here is not for this model I suspect.

Ah. It's a very late 899. The water pump is an easier fit on those. The manual is here in 3 parts as Seicento Technical Manual.

It's difficult to navigate (because it's so big and unsearchable) but very good. For everyday use, the Cinq Haynes may be easier.

Try turning the alternator and water pump by hand while the belt is off. Any roughness? The alternator should turn very easily, while there should be some resistance from the water pump (caused by the seal).

Thank you both.
The only Haynes manual I can find is for a Cinq up to the year 1998. So my 899 Seicento is from 2001, are you saying that the water pump has not changed on the models over these years. Sorry for labouring the point since you've already said that it covers it.

I have read on here that if teh water pump fails, the head gasket can go as a consequence. If I replace the waterpump and fill up teh cooling system, how will I know whether the head gasket is sound or damaged?
Thanks
Andrew

You need to fill up and bleed the cooling system.

The 899 engines seem less prone to HG issues than the FIRE engines. Signs of a possible HG issue are coolant loss, rough running (especially on initial start up), "mayo" on oil filler cap and especially dipstick. If it seems OK, I'd not worry overmuch. None of the above signs are completely conclusive, but if you spot one, get a compression test done.

Following from my initial messages (screeching noise from alternator belt area in cold/damp weather for a few months, then cooling warning light on, car overheating, and breakdown - with no water in cooling system), I have started to see if I can fix it. I was planning to test/replace the water pump and alternator, but before I did, I filled up the coolant, and fully charged the battery to see if I could get the car to start. The coolant reservoir held the water ok.
When I trurned the ignition key, the car would not turn over. It was like a retching sound for a split second every time I turned the key. Power was going somewhere but it was not starting up.
I wonder if someone can advise me on where I should begin to test what is wrong here? I would have expected if the water pump and or alternator had gone then at least the car would have started, or is non-starting related to these components?
I want to get the car repaired but I don't want to spend money on water pumps and alternators if it is something else. Can someone advise me on a few things to check please?
hanks,
Andrew

Either the alternator has seized (which may stall the engine completely), the cylinders have water in them (head gasket issue) or the battery is kaput (sometimes they'll appear to take a full change but be fubar).

Try removing all the sparks plugs: does the engine turn over? Does water squirt out of the plug holes?

If the engine doesn't turn over, replace the plugs, remove the alternator belt. Does the engine now turn over? If it starts, shut it off immediately as it will overheat (alternator belt also drives water pump).

Report back.
