Have bought a Fiat Cinquecento Sporting threw ebay and had a message off the seller, after I had paid a deposit, saying '' since the advert was posted it has started to burn a bit of oil at startup and at full throttle, this is down to a split or loose stem seal. Due to this I'm willing to drop the price down ''

any ideas on what this problem may be ? and how much it would cost to fix ? thanks in advance for any help

You need to do a dry and wet compression test on it.

Stem seals are pretty easy (and relatively cheap) to fix -- maybe £150 or so (would make sense to recut the valves, new cambelt, tensioner and water pump at the same time) -- but you need to make sure it's not a thoroughly tired engine needing new rings or even pistons.

If its on start up and on full throttle its either stem seals or oil rings

Expensive!!! Unless you plan to do it yourself,

Stem seals is an involved job,

Head off
Valves out
Stem seals out and then replace
Budget £130 quid for parts if your doing it yourself as you will have to replace all top end gaskets including the headgasket

Youll need .....
Headgasket set (get the best you can afford, payen or genuine fiat) around £45 stem seals will be in the set
Head stretch bolts (again get the best you can afford payen is one id reccommend) £12 - £20
Budget for exhaust studs as they do break
Plusgas (to help get those tricky bolts out) £5
Maybe if you are going to mod budget in a skim £45-£60
A whole bunch of jubilee clips as the standard ones are fubarred once removed
Then theres the tools youll need
Valve spring compressors
A half decent socket set
Torque wrench for the head bolts
Pliers
Screwdrivers
And maybe even more

Theres a guide in the guide section youll pretty much be doing a headgasket

Then whilst its all apart you may aswell do cambelt and waterpump aswell as a service

Cambelt kit £45
Waterpump £25
Oil filter £3 ish
Oil £20-£30
Airfilter £ ???
Fuel filter £5

If your handy with the spanners its a doer upper but unless the car is immaculate and fairly low mileage I personally wouldnt pay more than £200

If your not handy with the spanners id avoid it

Just my 50pence worth others may disagree

Thanks for the advice guys

Going to get my deposit back or at least try

your non returnable deposit is returnable goods as not initially described

you would also need anti freeze, impact driver, half inch CV tool and butane torch.

as well it may need new valve guides and or rebore it would ok to offer 200 if you planned to go to 1200 or 1400cc engine immediatly

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Something like this wouldn't happen overnight like the seller is claiming. Walk away.

Ian.
