Does the Schumacher have an inline fuel filter? Local factors checked by Reg number and said yes. Can't find it on car and have seen that apparently NO filters on 1.1 Sporting since 1998?
The car revs fine but just dies under load, fuel starvation? Think pump maybe overheating as seems ok when cold. If there is a filter it would explain why pump struggling IF overheating. If there is no filter it's either knackered pump or something else?
Please help as this is my daughter's car which I am borrowing as my car has a broken camshaft!

hmm fuel pump's don't tend to overheat due to the cooling effect of fuel flowing though them have you looked into compression test ? is it a high milage car ? and i believe you are correct about the fuel filter think the have filter on the actual pump its self. has there bean diesel put in instead of petrol accidentally ?

No lights. No previous symptons, just ground to a halt. Started immediately, revs perfectly ok but when pulling away dies. restarts immediately etc. I let car cool down for about 15 mins and managed to drive perfectly ok for about a mile then played up again. When turning ignition key to position before actual ignition (so pump runs) the pump seems to pulse up and down. I reckon pump is worn but seems very sudden?
Definitely no diesel, car done 79000.

Just had a thought! The fuel level indicator maybe reading totally wrong. It said about a third of tank, then went up a hill and got problem, when I managed to get car into layby indicator reading practically zero, maybe a lot less fuel than expected and therefore running on fumes? We have two Schumachers and my kids are always complaining about the intermittent level indication!

Time to brim it and see how much you get in.

It's possible for the in-tank fuel filter to be partially blocked IF someone has used a non-petrol compatible sealant on the pump housing - it will be snot city in the tank!
Fueling issues should throw up a P300 code (random misfire) even when the engine emission light isn't activated . Any chance you can borrow a code reader to check it?
Even with slight fuel starvation it will be fine when cold as the ECU increases the fueling untill the engine has warmed up.

I have concluded that fuel sensor is messing about. When tank on 1/3 still manged to put 32 litres in! I haven't let gauge go below 1/3 and have had no more problems. I won't bother to remove pump etc in case I create another problem.
Thanks to everyone for their advice. :)

Fuel filter on the mk1 is next to the fuel tank, on the later models its up inside the N/S/F wheel arch. 3 bolts to remove the plastic inner arch and its up in the top right corner :) looked or hours on mine! Haha

No. That is the charcoal canister. The filter is within the swirl pot at the bottom of the pump assembly.
