Hi, I hope someone has some insight on this (otherwise my '00 Seicento is headed for the breakers yard :'( ). Sometimes when I brake, the power steering light comes on on the dash, the power steering fails, and the speedometer goes to zero. Usually when I take my foot off the brake, normal service resumes (although the speedometer sometimes doesn't kick back in for a while). I've been told by the NCT that my brake hoses are corroded, could there be a connection?
Thanks for any help

I doubt if the brakes have much to do with it -- the action of braking might, though.

The speedo and the power steering both take an input from the speed senoror mounted on top of the differential. Could be that braking is making or breaking one of the earth contacts. Find all the earth points (they're detailed in the Seicento Technical Manual, free in the Downloads section), scratch them clean, cover with vaseline, tighten up. Do the same to the connector on the speed sensor.

Thanks for the replies, I'll check out those tips tomorrow or Fri + let you know how it goes.

No ABS on this model.

Cheers,
B

Thanks J.R, did you need to replace the whole speedometer sensor?
B

I have replaced sensor on gearbox and speedo stil does not work, have tried a new speedo and sensor not working with either, can you help?

Thanks for the help everybody, my issue appears to have been resolved by a new speed sensor. My seicento lives to fight another day!

HI
I have the same problem as the OP

Where is a good place to buy the sensor please?

Why is the level of gearbox oil important?

Wilcommen. First, make sure it doesn't have ABS (fortunately mainly confined to Schumakers)

Cheapest place is probably eurocarcare in Derby. Talk to one of the Micks, mention the forum.

Because -- assuming no ABS (in which case it's driven from the ABS) it's driven off the differential, so non functioning speedo can be a sign that the gearbox is dying due to low oil level.

Hi Guys, it seems to me that it is worth changing the speed sensor even though Big Mick tells me it is over 40 quid.

Can anyone point me at a picture of the location please? I have looked and there is no obvious sensor and there are a few possibles for a connector between the sensor and the loom. A pointer to a picture of the right connect or would help as well

Thanks
George

You can't miss it. It' screwed into the back of the gearbox above the dif. Some plastic crap that wears out after a x million revolutions due to cheap design thought, costing pence to build but a leg to buy,

HI CC1
I can miss it cos I dont know what it looks like.

I haven't even recognized the diff
