Hi folks, just new here.

I have a problem with my 1.1 sporting (2001), its becoming very sluggish (feels like im driving in 4th when i should be in 2nd) and the EOBD light is on.
Is this an easy fix or am i going to have to bite the bullet and take it to the garage?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ok, took it to the garage at lunchtime and mechie said it was a coil 1 code. No other codes were present (e.g. misfiring) so went and got a coil, fitted it and no difference!!

Anyone have any suggestions?

The EOBD light is still on btw.

roger!!, will see if they have a log of the code (although, im not going to be surprised if they dont!)

99% sure ive swapped the right coil. one at the back as you're looking at the engine which is the one i was discussing with the mechie.

Hopefully post something slightly more useful tomorrow!

ello again,

well tried swapping the cables around and only one set of cables works! so have bought some new spark plugs and a new set of cables, will replace tomorrow. might even take a photo or two to put up here.

Spoke to the garage that did the diagnostics and they can't remember the code and their machine doesnt store the tests either. mechie thinks it was 0335 "or something" :) didnt expect much more to be honest :)

As for mpi, not even sure its spi at present :p

Hello,

Still having problems with this badboy! I dont have a code as yet, thinking i might get it back into a garage or check and see if someone i know has the appropriate gear to scan the ecu.

So far have done the following:

Changed Coil 1
Replaced Spark plugs
Replaced HT Leads
Compression tested Spark Plug 1 port only (ran out of time)
Cleaned the earthing points for the coils
Reset the ECU (read in an earlier post this can sometimes be the issue)

Bit of further info on the motor, its a 51 plate, im not sure on the mpi or spi status either and no sure if the above helps?

Also noticed within the forums that there is often an issue with the lambda sensor, is it possible that this could be the cause or even the flywheel sensor?

Getting relatively frustratd with the motor at present! :) how much does a sei go for as spares / repair?

Ok, just back from the garage. Went through quite a few checks and found that there is no spark coming from lead 4. (swapped coils / leads etc etc, same as above)

ECU Scan gave code of: P0351 - Ignition Coil 1 Circuit (ECU ID: IAW 59F EOBD)

Seems that its pretty likely that its the ECU thats at fault?

I'll try and upload and some pictures in a moment.

If you're getting an ignition coil 1 fault, I'd expect no spark on 1 and 4 since they're fired from the same coil.

If that's not what you're getting, well.......................

Yes, you do have the evil micro ECU. They can be rebuilt.

any pointers as to where i could purchase a new one? Had a look on ebay but no to keen since not overly sure on this thing!

Check for no spark on #1, as I say, buying a new one is a really daft, stupid, expensive and silly idea. Buying one off eBay, doubly so.

They can be rebuilt. Use the search tool on this magnificent forum to find someone who can rebuild it.

But check #1 for no spark first. I suspect diagnoses that are illogical or incomplete. Call me a ratty old fusspot.

ok, just checked for spark on #1 and admittedly cant see anything (im sure this was checked on monday but the spark was very weak)

rundown so far of activity:

Diagnostics check 1:
Coil 1 changed
plugs 1 & 4 changed along with relevant leads
earthing points cleaned up on coils
#1 port compression checked - and found to be ok (didnt have time to check all ports)
electrical supply leads to coils checked and both supplying 12V
Also swapped cables / coils and the problem is only with coil 1 circuit

Diagnostics check 2:
Code: P0351 - Ignition Coil 1 Circuit
mechanic did a pretty comprehensive check in all honesty.
electrical lead to port 4 (connection next to spark plug) doesnt appear to be giving a signal (engine wouldnt start) all others are fine.

on a side note, i have recently procured a sledgehammer :)
