A question to any other Van Aaken turbo Cinq owners....

I've got one here and we'd like to turn the boost up, is it easily adjustable? This one has the full conversion with the intercooler etc.

Why do we want to turn it up? Well, just for a bit of fun really then we'll turn it back down again. The other cars currently here make the Cinq feel a bit lame, but with a bit more boost it could be a hoot !

This is what its up against and this may explain why I need some more boost:

Evo 6 RS 2 (300 bhp)
Impreza Spec C (330 bhp)
St 3 Cosworth 4x4 Saphire (300 bhp)
Nissan 200 Track Car (220 bhp)

Amen to that Rob plus it still wouldn't be able to match any of the competition I'm afraid, my mates all drive jap rallys slags and there quarter miles times range from low 15s down to 11s. You'd struggle to get mid 15s with 120bhp.

Liam

thanks.
not trying to get it to match the other cars, just know that it could be a bit quicker.
any other cinq turbo owners out there live near SW Lonodn / Surrey?

firstly, get an oil cooler fitted it is an essential item for any turbo car, its fairly easy to fit and as I have the intercooler as fitted by Van Aaken on my hi-boost turbo I can get the actual items I ordered from Mocal http://www.thinkauto.com/ although these will not be avialable until i return home this weekend, PM me if you want the details.

As has been said, it would need set up on a rolling road to get the most from it but the biggest mistake that all turbo driving owners do is just turn up boost, lowers lifespan rapidly, to get more when you should tune a turbo car the same way you tune a N/A car. Therefore, head ported and polished, better induction system, better exhaust, lightened fly wheel, hi-lift cams, forged pistons really its only how far your wallet and imagination will stretch.

As an example when I fitted my stage 3 ported and polished head my boost gauge instantly showed boost as 0.8 BAR compared to 0.6 before, the boost inself has not been turned up, the turbo is not producing any more boost, but the boost has a clearer path to the engine hence increased readings.

With a little bit of thought you can get your car running a healthy 120-130bhp which given the weight makes it very interesting, and in any case any one with a 4WD car who subjects it to standing starts will have no drive after no time at all, so you can always beat them when they are broken, LOL!

PS always take performance quotes with a pinch of salt they are almost always over estimated, and I'm not just saying this but have it on good authority from someone who works at Prodrive!

Ans in any case, a monkey can be trained to drag race, but the real proof of performance is on a track where its not just power, but brakes, chassis and driver that all contribute to the overall times.

Aaron.

Thanks Aaron if you can pm me the list of parts you used I may get the guy's who look after my rally car to fit one. The cinq is high boost Van Aaken so I'd better check and see if its already got an oil cooler fitted.

Yeah no problem, I'll be able to get the list of parts this weekend when I return home because unless it has been retro fitted your car will have no oil cooler as mine did not and it was a Van Aaken fitted hi-boost turbo. You will find that due to having an inter-cooler like I have the space is a little limited up front and you have to put the oil cooler on the corner of the front of the car (passenger side) above the tow hook, I will take some pics of how mine is mounted as I had to bend a bit on the cooler to get it to fit where I wanted it to go. Another thing is once you run the take off plate you will need to use a much smaller oil filter, I use the one meant for a renault 5 turbo as it also has space problems under the bonnet, plus the filter is designed for a turbo car so shoudl be ideal, a bit more expensive than a normal filter at about £10 but worth it. I saw engine temps drop about 10 degrees overall after fitting it plus the life of the turbo should be increased now.

Hi

Was hoping to see you at Brooklands, did you have a chance to send me the details of what bits you used for the oil cooler set up?

thanks

Craig

Aaron,

I spoke to you briefly at Brooklands, dunno if you remember - lol
Would it be possible for you to forward me a copy of the parts you used for the oil cooler setup also, as I have an oil cooler, but I just need to get hold of all the required connetions ect. to get it fitted before I embark on my engine swap.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,

yeah i remember you, sorry didn't get a chance to talk for longer as you caught me just as I was heading off for some lunch as was very hungry at the time. I never saw you again whenever I strolled back round. I've stuck a separate thread up with all details.
