We have a 1997 cinq sporting last week it just stopped. Towed it home.

Had someone look at it found that there was no spark.

He suggested changing the coil packs and the crank angle sensor.

We have done both and still no spark!

Any ideas?

Just tried, not sure.

Can hear the relay click then a slight noise from the pump.

Checked all the fuses and everything seems to be ok.

Don't know what to try next.

Hi

When you turn the key warning lights should appear and then go out after a short interval do they, appear and then go out?

Noel

Ht leads and plugs: don't know.

Lights on dash : all on then go out.

Take the air filter housing off so that you can see the throttle butterfly. Get someone to crank it over (but not touch the throttle).

You are looking for fuel pooling on the butterfly.

Thanks for your replies. We had another mechanic have look at it and found that his machine won't talk to the ecu and the keys were not being recognised.

He suggested that the ecu wasthe problem. We have changed this along with the little blackbox under the dash, the ignition barrel and door locks.

No luck.

Now getting to point of having enough.

any help gratfully received

I could've told you that that wouldn't have worked. Not many mechanics have the kit to talk to these ECUs; it's also very rare that these ECUs fail as well.

How could he say that the keys weren't being recognised if he couldn't communicate with the ECU?

The noise, and then click from the pump is enough to tell anyone that the immobilser is not the fault here. The ECU won't power up the relay that powers the fuel pump (and injector, coil packs, lambda, MAP, etc) unless the immobilser has been unlocked.

Another nail in the coffin for that theory was that if it the immobilser was causing the problem, then the yellow "CODE" light would've been lit on the dash.

Don't go back to that mechanic, clearly has no clue about the car.

Have you tried what I've suggested?

Hi arc

Tried what you suggested, no fuel pooling.

Can't hear the fuel pump either.

now the drivers electric window will only open with the ignition off, and the passenger with ignition on.

it appears that the bulb has been removed from the yellow code light.

We will put a bulb in when we get a chance and see.

Did you check that before the 'mechanic' started messing with the car?

I wouldn't be suprised that the immobiliser has kicked in now, I'd get all the old kit fitted back. Did this 'mechanic' remove the code bulb?

This shouldn't happen. There is something seriously wrong with the wiring.

First guess would be that there is a dodgy earthing cable. I can't remember off hand where all the earthing points are. I know there is one in each inner wing - not sure on the dashboard one though. I'd remove them, and clean them up - then refit.

OR.. how long have you had the car? Has it had (in it's past life) and aftermarket alarm system added? My car had an alarm system fitted that had a total closure module, which meant when I locked the car it would roll the windows up. If yours has a bodged up old alarm in there then that might explain why you're getting weirdness with the windows. It would also explain why the engine cut out (aftermarket alarms tend to also include immobilsers)

Hi, window were fine before swapping things over, re the bulb not sure its been there since we have had the car, thats about four years. No aftermarket alarm fitted to my knowledge.

Will get things swapped over as soon as we have a free moment.

many thanks

As soon as time allows we will put back all the original bits.

Hi

Put all the original parts back on.

When I turn the ignition on the relay clicks and there is another noise.

Crank it over and no fuel pooling.
No spark either.
The car has fuel in the tank, I know as I filled it up 3 days before it died.

windows still being a pain but will sort that out later.

We are now at the point of giving up. Don't want to spend a fortune on changing every thing.
