Hi all

I have a R Reg Fiat Cinquecento, which I have had for about 7 years. I have never really had any problems with it until now. Over the winter it had difficulties starting in the cold but would always eventually start and the engine always turned over. Last week I got in and it wouldnt start at all, the engine wasnt even turning over. I called out the breakdown people and he gave the starter motor a knock and it started first time. So took it to the garage and they put in a new starter motor. Picked the car up on Wed and it worked perfectly all day. Got in it on Thursday morning and it wouldnt start. So the garage came and picked it up. After they got it started it presented no further fault. Picked it up yesterday, started first time. Parked up at home and when I went to get back in it, it didnt start. It makes an electrical sound and will click but doesnt turn over. Also I noticed that the clock and cd player now have no electric to them. My other half told me to shake the car and eventually I got it started. Once I switched it off it then wouldnt start again. Tried again this morning, and nothing. Managed to shake it into starting once but then wouldnt start again.

I would be grateful for your thoughts, because I love my little car

Thanks

Hi Ash

Just had the breakdown people out again and typically it started every time.

He tested the battery and its absolutely fine.

The problem seems to be totally intermittent.

id now check the positive wires to the starter and alternator to starter by giving them a tug with negative battery cable off, and then clean up the earth points on the engine and gearbox to chassis

there will be one earth under the ECU (silver box to the right had side of the engine that bolts the the gearbox

also one in-front of the battery from block to the chassis

earth cables will be chunky black cables and the positive chunky red cables
