hi just wondering if anybody has had much luck with altering their timing (possible advantages and disadvantages) when they are setting up a turbo 1242 60 cinq, is it worth doing, easily done etc?
 
Nope, it's not worth doing unless you have a vernier. That way you can accurately time the advance or retard.

and with a vernier how good it would it be? and is it worth doing?
 
Not sure how many degrees adjustment it allows, rallycinq or jimbro would be the best people to talk to about them. I never went that far on an 8v engine :D.

With a decent cam I would imagine a nice benefit. My opinion for the money paid for verniers and cams, a nice 16v engine wouldn't go a miss (y).

Well, I actually did setup a vernier pulley for my 8V turbo, but I did not play with it, I set it to 0 to compensate for the height of the decomp plate. I actually even wrote a manual for that, but in Polish, never had enough motivation to write the English version. Anyhow, the PL version is here:

The scale on the vernier pulley says -30 to 30 degrees, but that's only a scale. From what I remember it is not settable beyond -15..15. But this is more than sufficient. More than that you can equally well just move the timing belt by 1 tooth and start over from 0.

As said, never had time to play around with it to see what can be done to boost the engine even more.

If there is more interest I can be convinced to translate the manual (y)
 
What is the height of your decomp plate and how many degrees did you had to add?

The plate is 2.5mm plus two thin metal HGs minus considerable head skim. I would say 1.8mm total lift, give or take. The timing is 4 degrees from 0 on the scale, but I honestly cannot tell if the 0 point matches the original pulley's 0 point. (Though 4 degrees makes sense according to my paper calculations).

Because that's what we think is implied ?... Don't really know :D

btw cam timing on a standard engine can be a few degrees off from the factory (talking 8valve not 16 valve which have the cams locked so timing will always be spot on)

Interesting this stuff about 8V, you saying I wasted money on my vernier pulley? I know the timing belt defo has some slack and elasticity that makes the actual timing different, but I had no idea it's that big of a slack...

Do you mean that the camshaft pulley notch is not tight enough and lets camshaft to play a few degrees, or this is due to the belt?
