mega confused, hopefully someone can help

as some know, my cinq (1242 spi) has been off the road for just over a year, head gasket amongst other things needed done.

HG was sorted and the cinq ran fine until about 3 weeks ago, when it developed a tiny misfire at a fast idle speed. this happened about a day after the injector light popped on for about 20 seconds and went out again. the misfire then cleared itself up until about a week ago. it idled fine but at about 1500-2500rpm it would pop, crackle and sound a bit lumpy, above that rev range it runs fine.

every time i started the car, it worsened, after a quick investigation i found there was an unequal spark strength between the 2 coil packs and the plugs were covered in soot from an overfuel issue. to help get to the bottom of that i changed the spark plugs and coil pack. now after doing that, the car is worse than ever.

it doesn't like idle speed anymore, give it a little gas and it will try to stall (but wont) then the fast idle issue is now a bit worse and through a bigger rev range (about 1200 to 3800rpm approx) above that the misfire clears and it is fine up to the limiter.

timing is fine, spark plugs are new, spark plug gap checked on each plug and is correct, coil packs are fine, leads are fine, clylinder compression should be fine seeing as the HG has just been done.

exhaust fumes smell a bit fuelly (if that makes sense) so could this worsened misfire symptom be the result of the overfuel now that i know the ignition seems to be working efficiently?

any idea what else i should be checking?

cheers

Mark.

Did you change the plugs recently? Is it only happening since the change?
Could be a cracked plug, or maybe bad lead. Assume you've done the old "stick your head under bonnet and watch for blue sparks" procedure?

<EDIT>Opps! Sorry. Just read it all now!.........Definitely I'd be looking for cracked plug, or split lead. Had same issue before myself</EDIT>

leads are fine, all been checked. it worsened after changing the spark plugs

really strange considering how poor the old plugs were, it couldnt have been getting a good spark. new clean plugs should surely have helped the situation, not worsened it? lol

totally confused by this one tbh

Could be earth also. Good point

Mine happened after I changed plugs, and likewise, it had been going fine but the plugs I took out were well overdue, and I was SICK when it started that with NEW plugs!!

Long story short, and after a lot of cursing and swearing, I had overtightened a plug and split the ceramic. Popped new plug in and was back in action again
