Seicento 1108cc engine - Please can somebody advise the correct position of the flywheel timing mark, with the crankshaft & camshaft pulleys are set to the respective marked positions the mark on the flywheel is next to the 5 o position. The engine is surging when idling & wonder if the timing is OK

Thanks

not really sure what your looking for but..

the flywheel it keyed so that the notch is over the 0degree arrow when piston 1 (and 4) are at tdc

its really just bits left over from helping people setup the dizzy back in the day before EFI

im not sure of the timing fiat use for idle but as long as the timing wheel is in the right position (you cant put it on wrong really. there it a pin on the pulley that locates into the timing wheel and even if you managed to put it out the car would never run)
it will be perfect. your problem will be elsewhere.

Explain the surging...

could be anything a blocked manifold pressure sensor, dead coolant sensor, dead air temp sensor, bad lambda (altho the lambda usually shows up a warning before you feel a problem)

Thanks for information, the car is surging from about 900 to 1500 rpm in approximately 1.5 second intervals & runs like this from when the engine is turned on. I have fitted a replacement cylinder heat, cam belt, water pump etc & am frustrated that I cant get the car to run right. Have tried replacing sensors, throttle body etc with second hand replacements without success (apart from coolant sensor) Also tried several Lambda sensors, again second hand.

Well the engine mounts are very soft in rotation about the crank axis, and the engine will move almost imperceptibly as the ECU 'hunts' for the correct tick over revs (speed) so if the cable is not loose enough the butter fly in the throttle body will move as well, the ECU sensors for speed are delayed so if you are in to servo mechanisms...

David will explain in English, as mine is worse than his.
