hello i need help.... my cinq started to missfire 2 days ago and today when i went to start it it made a noise like it was jamed, now the car will not fire up at all, ive had a look under the cam cover and its all milky and my water has all gone,i kno ill have to replace the head gasget, but im thinking of getting a head from the scrapyard and a new gasget, or there is a product out now called steel seal.... http://www.steelseal.co.uk/index.asp witch would be the best as ive never done 1 befor and not got alot of money, hope you can help, thank you herron

do it the proper way and change the head gasket that steel seal is trouble waiting to happen and itll permenantly seal the head to the block

ok ill get a head from the srapyard, is there a link on here to explian how to do it, ive never done one befor

The 899 is very simple, no timing to worry about.

So

Remove Bob and air cleaner pipes. Undo TB and put to one side, no need to disconnect fuel lines.

Remove rocker cover.

Remove rocker gear.

Get piece of cardboard, and poke each pushrod through in turn (so that you can put each pushrod back in the same place you took it from)

Undo the exhaust from the manifold. (its easier than trying to get the manifold off the head in situ)

Remove head.

Clean all mating surfaces, I mean, really clean the mating surfaces. No, really scrub at them with scotchbrite pad.

Replacement is the reverse of removal, make sure you preload the tappets properly, and robert is your mothers brother.

Cheers

If you have had the cinq for a while I'd be temted to take the origonal head to an engineering shop for a regrind rather then risk and unknown head, which will cost £.

But if it is flat within specification and your scrub it with nylon kitchen scrubber It should be ok as is.

thank you very much, ill look into having it skimmed aswell, 2 qs though, if i get one from the scrappy the rocker gear comes with it so ill ask for them push rods, and how do you prime the tappets

thats what i mean it never over heated, just started to spluter and when i checked the water bottle it had oil in it then the next day the water had drained away i think in the engine, ill replace it tomoz anyway, thanx

right 1 last q befor i attemt it in the morning...... do i need new head bolts or will the old ones do????

If you snap one you will need a new one.

Clean the bolt threads of any residue carefully, and the threads in the block.

be carfully tho

Head gaskets aren't too bad to change. I did a pug 106 last month (first one I ever done) and it was fine except that the flywheel and cams wouldn't lock together!

If you had no water, the chances are it *might* have overheated at some point. Put the head down on a clean, flat surface and see if it is warped.
