Hi All,

I have a Cinquecento 900s in which the injector light remains on after it has been started from cold/warm start. It idles unevenly and then cuts out so that you have to restart it again. This light is not always on and it seems to be intermittent. Also on accelerating from standstill the car seems to hit a flat spot and die causing you to ease off the accelerator for it to pick up again.

It has just been in the garage and they have replaced the lambda sensor as it was faulty but this has not cured the problem. At the same time it was going through and MOT and failed badly on emissions (they read 1200 instead of about 200). I have also replaced the injector in the carb but this did not help either. What can I do to get the emissions down? What could be causing this? Obviously the car is flooding with petrol but before going to FIAT to get them to run a diagnostic is there anything I can do or check? I have got another Cinquecento so I could try parts of that if necessary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers in advance.

Hi,

the lambda sensor is not the most reliable part of the car (at least at my sporting).
Maybe this is causing the trouble.

Cheers,
Marc

Thanks Marc,

But that has just been replaced 4 days ago, surely it cannot be faulty within that space of time.

This snds similar 2 my m8's prob with his cinq over fueling way to much so it was idleing at 500rpm and puffing out th eblack smoke he got a diagnostic done and a new lambda sensor plus there was a split in a pipe somewhere ill hae 2 ask him exactly wot was wrong but its sorted now and is fine

FIAT CinqueCento = Recycled Ferrari :D

Thanks Jonna

If you could find out what he had done to correct the problem and let me know that would be great.

TIA

Cheers,
John

I'm supposed to be taking to the FIAT garage on Tuesday and they are going to run a diagnostics on it to find out what the problem is. This will be £50 ex vat but they say they might not find the fault within the first hour and this could rack up a huge bill.

If anyone else has got any ideas I'd appreciate them.

TIA

Cheers,
John

I've checked the map sensor the pipe looks fine no splits or anything at the MAP sensor or the carburettor end. Double checked the connector wires too and they look fine.

Is it true that if the problem is intermittent then a diagnostics might not pick anything up?

If the warning light comes on, I was lead to believe it stores a fault code in the ecu for reading later. I also read on here about someone who took their car to Fiat for a diagnostic, they found no faults, relieved the guy of cash, and found/fixed bugger all.
He later took the car to a bloke who actually gives a damn (i.e not linked to Fiat) who found the dozens of stored fault codes that Fiat overlooked, and fixed the problem. Might sound cynical, but I believe all dealers are robbers who will do nothing at all to your car and charge you a mint if they think they can get away with it. The quote about 'we might not find the fault in the first hour' sounds like a typical translation of 'sir, we intend to take you to the cleaners and are just sorting out the excuses first'.

Sorry if this upsets anyone who works in a garage but this is my opinion based upon experience - everything from people tyre blacking my wheels when they oversprayed the tyres to leaving the car filthy (inside and out - worse than when I dropped it off) after warranty work.

Apparently the ECU does store a fault code but only if the fault is not mechanical, I guess they mean anything other then map/lambda/coolant etc.. sensors. This is what FIAT said to me. Guess what? 1 hour diagnostics and they could not find the problem, what a surprise, they are going to have a quick check of the fuel pressure and then that is all they are going to do.

If FIAT cannot find the fault with a FIAT car that they APPARENTLY make then god help us. That is some ECU system, gone are the days when you could adjust the mixture and idle speed yourself.

Mine is probably full of fault codes then. I'm always trying to start the key without remembering to switch my immobiliser off[)]

So according to fiat the car thinks it is running rich but the plugs tell a different story. Their diagnostics simulated all of the closed loop system and everything was fine. They only charged for one hours work, however they still charged for one hours work even though they didn't find anything. I'm in 2 minds as to whether to take it to another garage and just getting them to check the emmissions, just in case the first one was lying.

One thing that I have neglected to mention is when you turn the ignition to the on position you get the oil, battery, injector and handbrake light illuminated. The injector light then goes off and after about 1 second the injector light comes back on. This is all before the car is even started, has anybody else experienced this? Because the car surely cannot know about the emissions until the exhaust has exhaust fumes running through it.

Isn't the "injector light" the warning from the ECU that one (or more) of the sensors is producing an unexpected value?

You could have something as simple as Air temp, or coolant temp sensor faulty, or poor connection to the sensor: those would show up before you start the engine...

Just my 2p worth

The injector light should go off within two seconds then stay off
