Hi Guys,

In march I bought a MOT failure yellow cinq sporting with many faults very very cheap to use as a runaround to keep the miles off my evo 6. First things first I fixed the faults. However I soon caught the bug and fitted a 1242 engine with a 866 cam open cone filter and a custom backbox. Then a couple of months ago I thought i'd clean it out so set about removing the seats to shampoo the carpets. However while unbolting the rear seats and belts the plate behind the panel came out with the bolt, RUST! leaving a hole the size of a fist! I admit I was tempted to scrap it but I havn't had a project for a while so I set about stripping the car completely and finding all the rot. It was everywhere. along the seams, in the boot floor and inside the arches. So I got some 1mm steel and welded them all up and gave underneath a damn good coating of underseal. Then I set about filling all the dents. After that I decided that I wasn't very keen on the yellow so I primered it and sprayed it white indside out. Here's the result, all that is left to do is to spray the wheels but i'm undecided on a colour. Not bad for a car restored in a gazebo in my back garden. :D

I sprayed it with cellulose paint, didn't use 2K as I am very fond of my lungs and there are families with kids living near me. The other reason I used cellulose was because its cheap, very easy to work with and a good finish can be achieved and maintained with a regular waxing. I used a gravity spray gun with a 1.4 nozzle and a 25 litre compressor that delivered 9.2cfm. I had to remove all the doors, boot, bonnet etc from the car and spray them seperately so it looked as factory finish as possible. There are a couple of things i'd love to do to this but my evo takes priority financially so I wait for 2nd hand bargains to pop up for the cinq. I'd like to lower it by 40mm and either fit the 1.4 16v engine or turbo the 1242. Next on the list is to refurb the wheels I just dont know what colour to go with, silver, white, black or gunmetal. I'll get some better pictures when the sun comes out here.

Cheers from Ross

lol just find it funny. we bought a cinq shell that was "solid" (altho no in good condition pannle wise) we removed EVERYTHING that is removable. did a lot of hidden work to the shell before dads place (body shop) made the panels like new and sprayed them. took us ages to decide on a colour before getting white as it dont show marks and dents from events and such

hardest part was putting it all back together

great to see people are already resorting and preserving centos :)

To be honest with you I only bought this as a runaround, initially I wanted to make it a little quicker, I found a punto 1242 bottom end in my local scrapyard for £30, a 75 camshaft for £10 and a 75 throttle body for £15. I cleaned it all up and fitted my 1108 head to it with the 75 cam with all new seals and shims. I ground out the difference on the throttle body and fitted that with some new gaskets. Same guy had a stainless backbox that had a bigger bore so I got that for £15. I also found a 900cc bob cap on another cinq which the guy threw in with the engine I turned this into an intake with some steel tubing for front mounting intercoolers and fitted an old cone filter I had in the shed, origionally fitted to my old impreza.

The bodywork only happened because as I unbolted the rear seat and seatbelt bolts the panel collapsed and the threaded plate on the otherside of the panel came through the panel with the bolt still in it. It was quite a shock sitting in the back of the car holdin my air wrench that had a bolt in the socket with a piece of panel stuck to it the size of a small plate. I was planning on only tarting up the faded yellow panels but seeing as I now had to weld and spray the inside I thought I may aswell do the whole thing. I already had a load of 1mm steel and diamond white celly from doing my transit van last year so I got to work and did the whole car. I must admit its quite cool having a cinq that matches my evo.(y)
