side lights are fine

when you switch the lights to dip beam the main beam light comes on on the dash:confused:

on the passenger side the h4 terminal had melted on the black wire

so i replaced the h4 terminal but still no joy:cry:

checked all the fuses and replaced with new ones

any ideas would be greatly recived

Please run the engine

a) With the main beam warning on, as you describe, pull the lighting stack towards you.

b) With the lights all switched off push the lighting stack away from you, gently.

Check the bulb filements are ok visually or with multimeter if you got one

how do you meen lighting stack?

Think he means 'stalk'.

Check the earths behind each light.

I would go along with that, the black wire is your earth, now if one has melted it suggests that perhaps both lights have been earthing through one wire, causing it to over heat.

Also check the bulbs with a multimeter for shorts too. I once had a situation on a Cinq where the lights used to come on when I braked. It turned out that the filament for the offside brake light had fused and shorted against the filament for the rear lights.

The mainbeam warning light is off the same 12v wire as one of the mainbeam filements.

There is only the bulbs or or connectors or the earths that can be bad, two bulbs or two connectors, or two earths is strange.

My '98 does not seem to have dim dip when you try it, but the relay or resistor pack might have failed. But I only have the circuit for dim dip cars.

But 12v must be ok on the side that the main beam warning is taken, from LHS I think, the other side might have a bad fuse connection, or similar, or connector, or earth or bulb.

Owner may have to take 12v to each bulb connector, and back track if the bulbs light... May need to know that the LHS and RHS wiring are fused separately.
