hi folks am going to be helping my mate with him head gasket, i know how to change the gasket and do all the torque stuff and timing but just want to know about other things i may need to do. like oil change and coolent change what other stuff like that will i need to do.

might as well change water pump, timing belt and tensioners! apart from those nothing else really . as having the head off will not make other job easier

i always change engine oil too, while the head is off water etc can go staright into the sump.

well the funds are quite low due to it being christmas so just want to change any thing esential to the engine running and get it done as cheap as possible

i no how you feel haha, well if your out off pocket things like the belt and water pump oil etc can wait but its just easy to do while it in bits you see, im fussy so i change much as i can while im motivated and while things are in bits,,,,,,,,,most of the time really

i once changed the head gasket on a mates 1.1 cinq and he was skint, i poped the head off put a new gasket on and put head on without touching a thing, no skim etc just told him its at his own risk but the job was done for a few quid and it goes strong today.

You'll need to drain the coolant out first, before taking the head off, so don't put the old stuff back in.

Same with the oil, far better to replace the oil and filter with new stuff.

If you don't you risk a far bigger bill just after Christmas.

right cheers guys am just crack on with it the now and get it over with thanks for all the help.

When I did mine, I drained the water into a container to check if it had oil etc in it, then pour it away

I left the oil in the engine, and when happy with it running after building up then changed the oil and filter.
