Valve or valve spring gone? Injector?

Hello to all.

New day and seems to be a new problem.

My right foot is usually a bit heavy but my Cento Sporting has been up for the task so far without too many issues.

Right now I'm a bit worried.

After a small drive and small stop I got back into the car and found a new noise.

I thought it could be due to the weather is very cold and it would go away after heating the engine.

Just got home and made a small diagnostic to try and figure it out... with my ever so small mechanical knowledge.

Here's the thing:
-There's a "tac, tac, tac, tac,..." :)D) ticking sound coming from engine bay.
-I removed part of airbox (it seemed to come from there) and the noise is almost certainly located on top of the engine block
-It increases with rpms and in proportion
-I don't really notice decrease in power or acceleration

My guess it's something related to valves or respective springs.

Any ideas, costs and parts needed to repair?

Many thanks.

Done the hearing test and the conclusions are:
-It's coming from the injector.

My mechanic wich happened to be close and looked into it, told me it's usually normal for SPI engines to make that sort of noise. Some water could be mixed with the petrol due to condensation and causing it too. If failing the engine would be very messed up right now and wouldn't work properly.

My idle is very stable, oil is on level and it's revs without any problems.

Like with doctors, I ask for a second opinnion: should I be worried? How expensive and complicated is to replace the injector?

I suppose it's easier to get an injector from scrap if needed than to open the engine again and messing around with valves, clearences and so on.

After MOT I'm going to place the 32mm TB in and perhaps I'll buy a new injector too when going to the scrap to get it.

By the way: do I need to get a specific injector of the SPI Cento Sporting or does a Punto 55 one work too?

Many thanks for your time. Hope this thread works for other people too.

Going to push my luck now :D

Would it be worth getting the 32mm TB along with the respective Punto 60 injector, without changing my ECU's data or any other parts in the injection system?

hmm hope this doesn't sound stupid, but lack of engine oil will cause this noise!!

What about checking the shim clearance as well?

Well, OP has done the great screwdriver as stethescope trick. Oil level is OK, and valve train wear doesn't just happen suddenly unless the engine is fubared (you'd expect low oil pressure) or the oil feed gets blocked up. At least, not on 1108 engines.

Plans in near future, two or three weeks, will include new oil and filter so this will clear some doubts. Right now oil level is ok and regularly looked after... about 6.000km on it and according to Fiat specs.

Screwdriver trick gives me no strange sounds from block and iddle is perfect.

I really do not want to open the block right now before MOT. After it, with new TB and possibly injector the "tic, tic" will be gone for good.

Have fun and thanks for the healhy discussion.

rui... mine does tic tic tic tic too... já me disseram que isso é uma folga na árvore de cames... (i can't translate it!) ehehe

it seam's like it's not too serious... is it?

Allow me (were're both portuguese)

Pete's mechanic told him it could be the cams with a bit of gap. Perhpas your mechanic said tappets and you understood it wrong.

I doubt that it's that problem because the noise it's coming from the TB area. Pete's Cento has the same clicking and from the same area too.

Pete- make the screwdriver test. It's easy. If the injector goes, it will flood the engine with fuel and basicly make it impossible to drive. Solution: get a new injector.

thats my point.

We have to speak proper english for the benefit of the other forum members and yourselves so you can understand yet its ok to speak portugese on the forum so the rest of us cant understand

Sorry but its a bug bearer of mine all the rules should be the same for everyone including the foreign members as well, yes your english may not be as good, but your portugese is better than mine, i dont know what it translates to but it might benefit someone
